Kodiaq Windscreen Washer Timing - Pain

Featured Replies

I find it quite annoying that when I activate the front window washer it sprays the headlights first even though the wipers start going straight away on the windscreen, (which can start to smear anything that's on there first like insects or bird poo) it takes about three attempts before water sprays on the windscreen - is this normal or can this be adjusted so that the primary wash is on the windscreen first?

Is this normal or just my vehicle?

Thanks

Kodiaq 2017 Edition 2.0 TDI

Yep. It's rubbish.

Mine sprays the headlights and the windscreen at the same time, never had it just do the headlights.

I think the OP is suggesting that the washer fluid hits the headlights before the windscreen, not that the headlights are washed independently of the screen?

This has been covered before, the early Kodiaq's didn't have a delay on the wipers, so that as soon as you pull the stalk they start to operate, before the washer fluid has the chance to make its way to the screen.

My MY18 has a short delay from pulling the stalk to the wipers operating, giving the screen wash the extra second or so that it needs to reach the windscreen.

Yes, mine too. First headlights, then windscreen, then after some delay wipers.

Even when lights are off there’s a long delay till the fluid actually comes out on mine at least enough for a squeaky drag of wipers across a dry screen not ideal

I had that, from new, on my previous Superb.  The workshop manager said “they’re all like that”, so I asked to try another Superb, sitting handily.  It squirted beautifully.  The workshop then found the supply tubing was kinked and a new tube fixed it nicely.  (I never went back to that dealer.)

Might ask at next service I just assumed it was just one of those things

What year is your Kodiaq @C2atb?

If it's an early model then it's software related.

If it's MY18 or later and you have the issue, it could well be something else, like the kinked hose mentioned above.

Seems Skoda noticed the issue after initial production, and fixed it.

Why not bloody recall it if it was a known software issue 😂 I’ll be sure to tell them at this service and if new front wipers are needed again they can pay

Cost. Recalls are generally only done if there's a direct safety issue.

I suppose it could be classed as safety when you need to clear a windscreen quick and have to wait 😂 but yes I can understand that

Thanks for all the replays guys!

Mine is an early 2017 model in fact I think it was one of the first ones in the country, there isn't so much a delay as it much as it doesn't squirt onto the screen until the third (sometimes fourth) pull of the lever....

Sounds like it became an issue and they resolved it - I think I will take it back to the dealer and see if they can reprogramme it...

Take my 'software' comment with a pinch of salt, it may well be more complex that that i.e. hardware changes too.

There was a similar thread from the Karoq forum, where the owner fitted some kind of 'non-return valve' somewhere along the tubing between the washer bottle and the jets. If I remember correctly this helped to hold the washer fluid closer to the jets resulting in it reaching the screen much faster.

Worth asking your dealer though, please let us know how you get on

EDIT: Found the Karoq thread...

I have it booked in tomorrow so I'll let you know - funny thing is the washer activates straight away on the headlights - so it sounds like it maybe the washer pipes have been connected wrongly at the switching point as it should be washer sprays on the third pull of the lever on the headlights not the windscreen which is what I get....

I've done 56.5K miles in it so far and want to get this done under the warranty which runs out at 60K :)

Oh, so you actually have to pull, release, pull, release and pull the wiper stalk before the washers operate? That would be very annoying!

Are you pulling the stalk for long enough? If there is indeed a delay (i.e. a kink, weak pump, poor design etc.) it might just need you to hold onto the stalk a little longer to give the washer fluid time to get from the washer bottle to the screen?

The headlight washers operate a little differently, they rely wholly on high pressure. It is the water pressure that forces / extends the jets out from the front bumper, including the covering caps. The fact they're closer to the washer bottle and pump might also help?

Yes exactly that, and its been like it from new - annoying, but I never thought to ask about it before... until I came back on here for my map update... yes definitely pull it for long enough, I physically have to pull the lever 3 times before it sprays onto the windscreen - and it sprays immediately onto the headlights (on pull 1) as I said, and the wipers go immediately too which is frustrating in the summer for flies/bugs and in the winter for salt spray....fingers crossed they sort it and its an easy fix..

Hi Silver1011,

I deliberated over your comment have I pulled the lever for long enough, as I had an Occy L&K for 12 years prior to the Kodi and I only ever had to give it a slight pull let go and the washer would go and wipers wipe for around 5 wipes per pull of the leaver, so I was used to this being the case.

On the Kodi I pulled the lever but I didn't hold it for any length of time, that I was aware of so yesterday afternoon I tried it pulled and held and sure enough after a couple of seconds the washer came onto the screen, then on the third 'long pull' the headlights were washed.

I then tried it a bot later with a short pull and again it was just the headlights that got washed nothing on the screen until the third 'quick' pull of the lever.

So I believe you were correct it need a long pull of the lever to activate the screen wash on the first pull - thank you - I cancelled the garage appointment - didn't want to get charged for not needing to be.... :)

I've always previously had cars that stop squirting (but continue wiping) the screen when you let go of the lever, so I guess I've only ever "long pulled" the lever on my Kodiaq.

Great result!

The biggest pain i find is that the wiper stops right in the middle of the drivers eyeline (australia RHD). Leaves a whitness mark so when it lightly rains it follows in line and its right where your looking.

Sorry I've not seen this - sounds like there is a wiper home issue if it stops in the middle of the screen?

This I would take to the garage to look at.

Isn't this the changing the wiper blade position - on my Skoda you pull the wiper stalk once after ignition is turned off and the wipers move into the straight up position to make it possibe/easy to change the wiper blades. Not sure it's like this on the Kodiaq?

[EDIT]Looking at the manual I think it is like this:

Before replacing the windscreen wiper blade, put the windscreen wiper arms
into the service position.
Setting the service position
Switch the ignition on and off again.
Within 10 seconds, push the lever in the direction of arrow
hold for approximately 2 seconds.
Removing the wiper blade
Lift the wiper arm from the windscreen in the direction of
Tilt the wiper blade to the stop in the same direction.
Hold the wiper arm and press the safety catch
.
Remove the wiper blade in the direction of the arrow
Attaching the windscreen wiper blade
Push the windscreen wiper blade in the opposite direction of the arrow
until it locks into place. Check that the windscreen wiper blade is correctly
attached.
Fold the windscreen wiper arm back to the windscreen.
Turn on the ignition and press the lever into the direction of the arrow

I think what you mean here is the top most point that the passenger side blade goes to on operation?  Guess the only thing to do here is thoroughly clean the screen constantly to get this mark removed.
