Windscreen delamination

Featured Replies

Just giving the old girl a clean and noticed what looks like the milky beginnings of a delaminating windscreen....

Anyone else had a prob ?

Is it the original windscreen, fitted at the factory?

I had something similar on my 2008 MkII Octavia (original windscreen), it got similar to yours then didn't change / get worse during the 8 years we had the car.

Interesting … Cars still under warranty until October next year ( 5 years old ). So what to do.... I may end up keeping this car for another 5 years so if it's going to stay like it is now I can live with that.... But will it ? Then we have the associated problems with a replacement windscreen... < sigh >

I'd wait until the next service, ask them to check it out, and if they say there isn't anything they can do, ask them to make a log of it on the cars service records.

Then, if it does get worse, but only after the warranty has expired, you at least have some evidence to try and get some goodwill out of the dealer and/or Skoda UK.

Yeah cheers I’ll do that... well actually it’s just been serviced but it has a full year ahead to develop so I can make a decision before my times up !

just hate the idea of a replacement screen.... had one done on an immaculate mk2 Supra many, many years ago and the fitter damaged the pillar of course it was covered by the screen .... you can guess the results ...

Windscreen changes are fairly routine. I've had well more than my fair shair for the miles I do (f11ck1ng horrendous roads up my way, might as well just be gravel 😡) and can't say I ever had a vehicle damaged. Also just about every month one of our work vans is getting a new screen without problem either. Really wouldn't sweat getting a windscreen changed. Your bigger issue would be whos paying for it...

Windscreen changes have recently started to get far from routine. I broke the screen on my new Citroen recently. Because it had a camera behind it and a couple of other important sensors it was a right song and dance to change. Firstly they didn't seem to have the right screen for my cars electronics fit (it needed three phone calls and me sending them a photo of the screen to confrm which one it was)  then they realised that they needed a specially trained fitter who was booked solid for two weeks. Then on the day it took two blokes about four hours to fit, 90 minutes of which was removing several bits of the dash, recalibrating all the sensors and doing a test drive to insure that they all worked. There seemed to be more electronics work involved than actually fitting the screen. My best mate had a similar experience with his new Merc, but the windscreen company needed his car all day (again due to multiple sensor recalibration) and he had to drop the car at a special centre about 40 miles from where he lived. At least with my car they came to the house.

I think it perhaps depends on the vehicle and your location... Autoglass are the go to company up my way and they always call out (2 fitters when necessary). Can't say I've ever heard a negative report against them though. I guess there are consequences for the tech as consumers we demand on our vehicles.

Personally I would prefer them to take as long as necessary to fit the screen right without damage and everything working as it should.

I typically replace one screen a year across my three cars and I have never had reason to question the quality of the workmanship by any of the windscreen fitters.  I have found Autoglass to be okay. Last year they left a tiny dirty mark on the inside of the A pillar of my Superb but I cleaned it off myself in a couple of minutes.

Your windscreen looks normal to me, but if you'd like a new one just chuck a rock at it and pay your excess

that was a joke

Haha :D I'll check and come back.

Interesting article on the subject here

But it sounds like you need a lot of delamination before it becomes a risk/replaceable:

"‘Edge delamination of laminated glass with polyvinyl butyral (pvb) interlayers is known to occur in situations where there has been poor quality control during manufacture, specification and installation. It has also been demonstrated through actual blast-tests that edge delamination has a detrimental effect on the blastresistance of bonded laminated glass. Delamination of the laminated glass appreciably reduces the blast resistance of the glass if it extends more than 8mm from the edge, and if it extends along more than 25% of the total perimeter."

i'll have a read. Yeah I had one going on a TVR years ago. That was pretty bad but seemed to stop after a certain point. That car was gararged all the time. I wonder if it makes a difference if the car is on the drive exposed to varying temps ? It's not bothering me but my logic is I would rather have it replaced free under warranty than 5 years down the line where I would have to pay and there maybe more associated costs because of fancy sensors etc.

Had two replacement screens over the years, both had to be redone due to wind noise and seals poorly fitted. Always a last resort now.

You clearly don't want to have your screen changed based on your own past experiences.

Therefore seems a rather moot point your making here. Until you actually ask your Skoda agent about a warranty replacement this is all just conjecture.

Even if it is a warrantable claim will it not be a 3rd party screen specialist that does it on behalf of skoda anyway?

The moot point I was making was to ask other is they had a similar problem as per my original post.

With all due respect I find your post a little odd ( and it could jut be me ) and also a little confrontational. Do you usually post on PistonHeads ?

Have never posted on piston heads (not a member), very rarely go on that site. Also am quite new to briskoda...

Apologies if you found my previous post confrontational, someone's tone can be difficult to pick up on in writing. I did not mean to offend.

I just found your stand point rather contradictory/confusing when as I said you don't seam to want the windscreen changed anyway in case of shoddy workmanship. I get what you were originally asking but until you actually enquire with skoda yourself regarding your own case you won't know if it's warrantable or not.

Hope this clears things up without further offense. 👍
