DSG Flat Out Gear Changes

Featured Replies

OK Folks,

I am on my second VRS DSG, the previous was a VRS220. On the 220, kick down flat out changes were all excuted quickly and smoothly at the redline - as expected.

On my VRS245, the gear changes are awful. It feels like the car is slowing down between the gears as though the engine is cut as the changes happen.

I have the DCC option and as I change modes from Comfort to Normal and then through to Sport the changes get better, but never feel right.

I normal running, the gear changes are spot on and smooth as you like.

There are no OBD faults being reported.

I'll be taking it the dealer for them to check, but it would be useful if any 245 DSG owners could let me know if they have had a similar problem, or not.

Thanks for any help.

I'm sure @themanwithnoaim will be along soon. I think his 245 spends most of it's time doing flat out gearchanges :D

How new is it?

Picked it up brand new in June. Just coming up to 4500 miles.

I waited until it has had some decent mileage before giving it the beans.

My 2.0 150 has flat spots when going flat out. I assume its because it is diesel and the red line has lost boost.

Seems to like it and has less power loss when i go flat out and change gears 'manually' with the gear lever

In fact the gear changes are so fast on the Hampshire Slayer (HS17 NFU) that the owner has started wearing NAPPIES because colonic irrigation is a regular occurence now.:blush

@JD52 the software is different from the original VRS Mk3's in it now has a self-self-learning function that adapts the speed of changes & change points. Even after thrashing them for a few thousand miles although better, they ain't great, tend to feel like they are trying to slip the clutch.

I use the paddles a lot & that helps but it's still not all that till, I remapped the DSG (with a DTUK TCU). This little box of tricks stops the self-learning function & clamps the clutch plates harder, it also speeds up the gear changes. @Newport91 & @Robsskoda can comment on its effects, they both been out in it. Sports mode on the gearbox & using the paddles to change & the acceleration is relentless, yes that's the only word for it.

The 7 speed wet clutch DQ380/381 and the DQ500 all tend to slur the changes a little.

A lot of discussion on the VW forums, the general opinion is it's either to give the box a higher torque rating or to suit markets that like conventional autos.
