Oil for vRS Petrol

Featured Replies

Rather than hijacking the other thread more I thought I'd start a new one.

Recommended oil for vRS petrol, or any of the petrol models is 502 for fixed, 504 for variable.

I'm going to change the oil around every 5-7k, so 502 is the spec I need.

This leaves the choice wide open.

For one reason or another I'm looking at either Shell Helix Ultra or Shell Helix HX8, both 5W40.

I can get both for a good price, locally from eurocarparts with a 50% off code.  Both are 502 spec.

Any idea what the differences are or whether the Ultra is worth the few extra quid?

I'm aware TPS sell quantum by the way, they're just not as close and it's not actually any cheaper (the HX8 is £20 for 6L).

VW502 is suitable for fixed servicing of a TSI and good for the job.

Maybe Long Life Oil eventually having short lived TSI's.

Main Dealers use VW504 / 507 for fixed or variable service scheduls with TSI's.

the Recommended by VW oil is VW504 / 507

& now VW508 / 509 for fixed or variable.

The manual says 502 for fixed.   Other threads seemed to suggest the 502 was more protective than LL, just doesn't last as long.

No idea if this is true mind....

I suggest all the time that VW502 00 so 5w 40 FS is better for TSI's.

Hopefully the TSI's are no longer made of chocolate.

It lasts 10,000 miles which is what matters if you are changinng oil at that or less miles, and your car is a keeper and you want it to last.

Some do high miles and cant be changing oil and filters every few months.

Changing the filter @10,000 miles or less can be as important as changing oil at lower mileages.

Exactly...  i want the best for the job.   But which 502?  lol

The Shell website doesn't explain the difference 😕

I got the VW 508 00 as a top up.

@Alex-W

They are not going to explain why one might be better than the other because they want both to sell and soe will just assume the more expensive is better.

The prices you said are cheap, even cheaper than the VW502  or VW504 i buy at ASDA.

I buy that cheaper than oil would cost me at my Local Motor Factor with a trade discount.

It is just Synthetic Oil for not very high tuned engines to drive on roads not tracks.

So basically, you're saying it doesn't matter then?

Yeah, the 50% off code makes it a ridiculous bargain at ECP.

Just to confuse things, the shell lube match site recommends the 0w30 version of both the ultra and hx8 (both 504 spec) for short and long interval servicing.

It almost seems that if you're changing it yearly you can pick between 0w30, 5w30 and 5w40 on pretty much any brand of fully synthetic, as long as it meets either 502 or 504 spec, which most FS do (I'm yet to see one that doesn't, even Halfords own etc does).

Don't forget 0W40!

Not a grade I'd heard of but if you look through the approved oils list (create a login at erWin Skoda and you can access such downloads for free from the homepage link) there are 502 oils of this grade. Both the Shell ones you mention are on the list, so either will be fine.

Just had my 5w-30 long-life drained & put this stuff in, 3 weeks ago.

vw502 & vw505 spec & have noticed the engine sounds more quiet especially on startup, a few golf R peeps use this oil & I came to the conclusion that if it's good enough for them then it's perfectly fine for my vRS, I purchased 6 litres from that seller, delivered in great timing.
