Which car?

Featured Replies

OK, so I've decided that I want a Skoda.

I've also picked the engine - the 130 PD-TDi.

But which car?

A brand-new Fabia vRS (the hooligans choice)

A slightly-used Octavia (Huge boot!)

A nearly-new Superb Comfort (Very stylish, loads of kit)

Any help would be much appreciated!

Well if you don't need the space, then the furby makes sense.

Wouldnt mind wafting along in a Superb though!

What are your requirements? Any serious load-lugging? Do you have a family to cart about? What about motorway mileage? Do you enjoy ripping about at high speed or are you a civilised person? Would you want to tune and upgrade the car?

The car is replacing a Fiat Multipla, and will be my Wife's means of getting to work (unless I nick it for the day).

Yes, there is a little one to move as well. But for 95% of the time, the Furby would be big enough.

But the temptation of having a 'posher' car for the same money is big. And I did like sitting in the superb...

I like wafting along, but I also enjoy a good drive down twisty border roads. What is the Superb like at this?

As for modding, the Suspension/body would stay standard, but the engine may get Jabba'd!

Depends on your requirements. The Octy is a great car,but if you need to carry lots of passengers, or they have long legs or you do, then the rear leg room is a little bit on the small side. The Fabia is a nive little car, but again rear legroom is smallish. The Superb is a fantastic car, but large. The rear legroom is huge, and so far I have had not 1 complaint only comlplements. The boot is a reasonable size (although nowhere near the Octy for capacity or versatility) and for comfort is the best of the bunch. It also have parking sensors among its list of standard toys ,which come in very handy.

At the end of the day, its your choice. I would say probably that the Octy is the best all rounder, the Fabia best for town work and the Superb for cruising/comfort.

What you have chose though is a fantastic engine, which goes like stink with good economy

i would go for a superb... could'nt be posher than that (:. my only concern would be parking space...in this country...

They are easy to park with those rear parking sensors, the trouble comes with those huge rear doors.

Spot on ...well put, just to add that the Octavia is being replaced next year with a new model and not a facelift - so may affect values of outgoing model.

Or you could "do a Stopani" and get one of each :D

From your answers, it sounds like either the Fabia or Superb would be best for you. I haven't driven a Superb, but I'm willing to bet that the standard suspension gives loads of roll in the "twisties". However, it would be a far better vehicle for wafting.

It's a question you really need to answer for yourself. Incidentally, which Superb were you looking at? Classic, Comfort or Elegance? There's quite a difference in spec levels between them.

To me, the Superb handles better than my old Octy (which was a S reg GLX TDI est). It rides better, and doesnt roll any more than the Octy, but goes round roundabouts with more traction and assurity.

As I said earlier, the only downside is the lack of versatility, and the extra room needed for the rear doors. What you do get with it though is a feeling of plushness far away better than the Octy.

Opening the rear doors will not be a problem. I am used to the Multipla - this thing is so wide that the wheels tend to touch both white lines in supermarket car parks.

I was looking at the Classic. I've seen one at a main agents with alloys, 5,000 miles, on an 03 plate, for

Kentish - what is the fuel consumption like on yours? Combined is 48mpg - do you get close to this?

Round town we get around 40mpg, but on a run it can go up to 50/55.

Combined run/town has given us 48/50 so yes, it can do it. It all depends on how much you use that right foot to move the pd130 .

A word of warning, as it cruises real nice at speed, and you dont get the feeling of going fast you might like to just remember how helpful things like Road Angel etc are!!

I get around 55mpg from my Superb 130 TDi, but I do quite a bit of motorway miles, if its busy and the average speed drops to about 60mph, then the mpg rises to about 60mpg too :smile-l:

Mines a Classic, no alloys (not too bothered - would be nice), climate, trip computer, only thing I want is cruise control (help keep the speed down).

I must say that I'm impressed with the handling, maybe the stretched wheelbase helps with that, it certainly doesn't feel like a big car to drive, but it is a nice motorway cruiser.

Hi,

I currently own a Skoda with a TDi 130PD engine - clothed as a Fabby vRS. I don't believe it's the hooligan choice. It's a smart little car with a diesel engine!

It's a good sized car for a small family I, or even better for one.

its definately not a "hooligans car" its a "sporty diesel"

sporty diesel

<Sirens!>

OXYMORON ALERT! OXYMORON ALERT!

</Sirens!>

:D

I know this is going to sound really stupid but Ant have you got big feet?

In the Octy there is loads of room betweem the clutch and the footrest, in the Fabia there is slightly less but when I drove the Superb I couldn't get my foot onto the footrest between the clutch and the center console.

Having both an Octy and a Furby in the family (and two kids and a dog), I have to admit that when we all go out we use the Octy (kids are 17 & 15 and both 6 foot) and they do moan about cramped legs. I don't even bother taking them both in the Furby.

I agree with Colin over the sporty deisel tag rather than a hooligan car for the Furby vrs.

If you don't really need all the space I'd go for the Furby but in you need the space go fro the Octy - in either case the fuel costs are great with the deisel engine.

Well, it bought out the hooligan in me when I drove it - had to overtake everything in site, just to feel that huge torrent of torque :drive:

Unfortunately this is where the Octavia shows its Golf roots.

I'm tending to go off the Octy at the moment. 3 main reasons:

- Don't seem to be able to find one at the right price

- Don't like the idea of buying a nearly new car that is about to be replaced

- I'm sure the Fabia has more space in the back than the Octy - it's certainly more comfortable.

A word of warning, as it cruises real nice at speed, and you dont get the feeling of going fast you might like to just remember how helpful things like Road Angel etc are!!

This is very true - I suspect that the Superb is very similar to the 6 speed A4 V6 TDi Quattro I used to have.

I had a job for a year where my fuel was 'free' and was meant lots of long trips to and from home. I found that I was regularly doing licence-threatening speeds so I sold it and bought something noisier which would 'let me know' how fast it was going... an Impreza Turbo. I knew I was doing 90 in that, which was comparable with 120 in the A4 in noise terms !

Strange but true and I avoided points!

Ive had all three!

1. Fabia is to small for a family car, but a great runabout.

2. Octavia is a nice motor ,but cramped in the back.

My 7 year old was forever kickin me in the back. Boot is Massive though.

3. Superb cant be beat for comfort or room{front & rear}

Down side, can feel a bit big in town{i live in SW London} Because it's not a hatchback , the boot suffer's {but i can still fit the pram, shopping, scooter.tv&vid :D }.And as Kentish said the rear door's are on the large side.

On the school run / short trips i get 29-33 mpg.On motorway's ive had 59mpg.

Mine is the 100PDi.

Depend's on what you want from your car, see if your dealer will allow you a couple of hour's in each car, that should be long enough for you to get the feel of them etc.

Best of luck

Steve

P.S The Superb is the ONLY car ive ever enjoyed being in the back of.

Simpson's on the telly & the wife drivin. Exellent!!!!!!
