"Telephone is not available" message on maxdot (Octavia Scout MK3 - My16) can Columbus firmware upgrade to 0411 fix the issue?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am getting "Telephone is not available" message on the maxdot when I press the phone button on steering wheel. The phone pairs correctly with the car's Bluetooth and all functions just fine via touch screen and Voice commands. Android auto works fine as well but again,  "Telephone is not available" message appears the maxdot when I press the phone button. Phone menu is not available for selection on maxdot at all. I have not found a solution to this issue to date and spent hours researching on this and other forums. Would Columbus firmware upgrade to version 0411 from v0390 resolve the issue? Does anyone know VCDS procedure to fix this problem if VCDS is applicable at all? I have tried various Android phones and none of them seemed to be able to activate the phone button functionality.

I have had similar happen. I switched off the Bluetooth function in the head unit and phones and tried it again. I also deleted out the phones and reinstalled to get it working again.

Did all as suggested, no luck. Even wiped  the cache partition on my phone, forgot all paired devices on teh phone and reset car bluetooth to factory settings. "Telephone is not available" message persists. The phone function works fine on Columbus touch screen but it is kind of unsafe to use it this way.

Mine does this occasionally when it somehow doesn't recognise my phone network. However, when you see the phone not found message, scroll up or down with the right roller and you will get a list of contacts and can then call them. In coming calls always work perfectly and you can answer them with the steering wheel controls.

The problem I have is there is no phone menu available at all on MaxiDot. It is also not available for selection in Columbus under Instrument cluster option.

My Columbus is MIB1 and is on version 0411, but I believe that your Columbus is MIB2 and has different firmware. In any case going from 0390 to 0411 only affects Canton operation.

The car was made in June 2016 so it MY16 model. I am not sure how to check if the unit is MIB1 or MIB2. I have tested the Phone button with several different phones and the issue is the same (Nokia 7, Moto G3, Samsung Galaxy S7 and S9). Another Octavia owner experienced the issue back in 2016 and it was fixed by running a small/quick update by his dealer. His unit is still on the same level of code as mine (0318). Perhaps all that was updated was Bluetooth module firmware. It is hard to tell. Skoda update portal is down and these updates are not freely available on the internet.

That might be MY17 and will definitely be MIB2. MIB2 was introduced with MY16 at the end of May 2015.

Smartlink/Android Auto/Apple Carplay, which you said you have, is not available with MIB1.

I managed to pull the head unit from the glove box only for about 3 cm  (I have the tool required). I does not want to come out all the way. It is MIB2 Harman unit. I was hoping to be able to disconnect it and perhaps on re-connection it would re-set the bluetooth module. It looks like that the cables are short. Any idea how to accomplish this? If this is not possible, is there a fuse that I can pull out to achieve the same outcome? The manual talks about this error. Is says if the message "Telephone not available" pops up, there is a problem with the bluetooth device. My phone connects perfectly fine to bluetooth and everything works except the steering wheel phone button and there is no telephone menu on the maxi dot. Perhaps something is disconnected from the head unit. Very frustrating...

Finally solved. It was a software update that fixed it. The car lost WI-FI with the update but there was really no use for it that I could see. The phone button now works. Paid $95 for the update to the dealership.

When I pair my Pixel 6 Pro (Android 12), it cuts the phone connection so that the signal icon on the top line is crossed out and the Maxidot message "Telephone is not available" message appears. I've tried forget from the phone. Any ideas? Thanks

Solved!

Just decline the option to allow car to access phone's SIM card
