Clunky 1st to 2nd gear change

Featured Replies

I take it everybody else's 2019 Fabia 3 cylinder can be a bit noisy / clunky going from 1st to 2nd? Just sounds very mechanical (strange that...)

All the gear shifts from 2nd up are fine. I sort off managed to minimise it by lifting off the clutch pedal slower.

Its been like that from day one so just presumed it was a normal characteristic of the clutch / gearbox?

Also I've noticed the engine can be slightly rough for a while while driving from cold, you can feel / hear it 'bumping' as your going along say at 30mph.

Seems to settle down after a while, some days doesn't do it others it will to different degrees.

Again, i guess that's normal for these?

6 speed, 1.0 TSI 110 here also. Yes, the 1-2 shift can be a bit... chatty. Likely also the gearbox mount. I find to do it nicely I have to 'pace' the shift somewhat -- pausing briefly in neutral rather than snapping directly -- and moderating the clutch action accordingly.

The other thing is that 1st and 2nd gears are double synchronised rather than single. So that's why it's a little clunkier.

The slight thunky feel when lifting the clutch pedal is likely a combination of the dogbone mount and the gearbox mount.

I'm in the process of changing the mounts to Vibra Technics ones, i'll say you will want to stay OEM if you want to retain the smoothness otherwise.

That said, i've done the upper right engine mount, and the left gearbox mount, yet to do the dogbone mount. The difference in feel is absolutely insane! It feels less crashy and a lot more stable cornering on poor roads.

Once i've got the final dogbone mount i'll do a full write-up and review on them.

Exactly the same here, little clunky 1st to 2nd but nothing major. As @FabiaGonzales says above, it's down to the style of the gearbox and synchros. Nothing to worry about, and you get used to it quite quickly I've found.

Yep it’s normal...... better than in the Citigo the wife has just come from though. They are noisy going 1->2, 2->3 and sometimes 3->4. 😲

Cheers guys, I'd never get these sort of answers from the dealers!

I've found revving a bit higher before changing from 1st to 2nd also seems to help with a smoother less clunky sounding gear change as well.

Got it pretty weighed off now. I don't feel at one with the seating position still but maybe I'll get used to that after some more time.

It went in for a 1000 mile look over on yesterday, at least they seem to of sorted the rattle from behind the aircon control panel.

I also mentioned the engine can be a bit rough running for a period while warming up. It sort of 'bumps' as your going along say at 30mph.

Think that's normal as well...

Mines the same, as was my previous Fabia. It's not the nicest gearbox at all, in fact my Citigo has a much nicer change.

Aside from forgetting gear number six, the gearchanges (1st. to 2nd) seem fine.

I to, find the quick blip to speed the gear change works well.

I may even try double de-clutching with this g/box 😉
