Favorit Rear Wheel Bearing - Washer

Featured Replies

Hi All

Getting a loud droning noise around 65mph so thinking the wheel bearings might be on the way out. I have bought a rear wheel bearing kit from Euro Car Parts which comes with replacement Pin, seal and cover but does not come with a replacement thrust washer

watching this video suggests that the washer must be replaced once disturbed.   Should I be looking to get a new washer? And if not supplied with the bearing kit where on earth would I even find one?

Also, any tips on good places to jack up the rear with a trolley jack. Jacking points on sill not the best? Where the trailing arm meets the chassis perhaps?

Cheers

Wes

I can only think that the reason to replace the washer is that the old one might have some score marks on it that could prevent it doing 'the slide' test to indicate the tightness achieved for the bearing. I confess to only changing two rear bearings on a small Skoda, but several on other cars and never worried about a new washer. There could be another, more technical, reason that someone may come in with.

I always jack on the sills, however I use a thick rubber 'puck' with a single Vee groove that is moulded to take the vertical flange and support the cill. Much like this one: https://www.amazon.com/TMB-Motorsports-V-groove-Universal-Adapter/dp/B01FZ3F0X8. I looked on ebay UK, but could not see one with a vee groove. They all had a wide slot that to me is defeating the object.

Thanks, does seem to be only that one video I saw which suggests the washer needs to be changed.

Bigger issue at the moment is that the cheapo bearings ECP supplied seem to be slightly oversized or slightly out of round and I cant get the outer races to drift in and I dont have a press.  Will try and source a better one. Perhaps I can still get them from VAG as I think they lived on in the Felica and some small VWs

Sorry you have this problem - I had the opposite in doing my rear conversion to discs. I have a press but the SKF bearings took only a few gentle taps with a drift to go in.

Highly unlikely the bearings are out of round - but do check this carefully with the inner race. Check they gave you the correct part numbers. It should be equivalent to 311405625F for the inner and 311405645B for the outer.

If you do need another set, do not use VAG as their mark-up is high. Try Autodoc. Enter the above numbers in their search and you will get all the top brands pop up.

thanks for the tip

The one from ECP (unbranded) the outer bearing race drifted in with a bit of persuasion but the inner race would not go in, stated off square but then would only start to go in on one side, no matter where I hit it or how hard. The old bearing race drifted in with a few light taps. Assume its a cheapo part with poor tolerance control and I got one slightly at the upper end of the spec

Rule number one before replacing a faulty part with a new third-party one: check them side by side using measuring tools.

I took a look at the video the only thing I would not reuse would be the cotter pin.

Everything else just needs cleaning and a lot of grease.

By the way yesterday as I was checking my car I found out that my rear wheel bearings have a bit of play.

Should I just tighten them or clean them regrease them and the tighten them.

P. S.

And also it worth checking your front suspension top mounts.

As a side note mine were shot big time so I took the car to a mechanic (😢) to replace them.

I of course sourced the parts.

Only used Monroe.

If the bearings have a play, it's time to change them. Nothing replaces lost material.
