VRS 240 Clouds of steam/smoke

Featured Replies

Hiya,

I've had the 2019 VRS 240ps DSG for about 5 months now. It's done about 4000 miles.

Upon WOT, and most noticeable in 3rd gear, once it really starts pulling about 4000rpm, the back windscreen is white from all the steam(?) coming out the exhaust.

I put it down to it blowing all the condensation out of the exhaust but not sure there's that much in there. I also wondered about water injection but don't know where that would be stored. Finally thought it could just be running so rich at that RPM/boost that the steam is not fully burnt petrol.

It runs fine. Just wondered if anyone else notices this?

Yes, very common on the 2.0tsi, especially so if the car isn't fully warmed up

Yeah theres a few threads on this, if theres no shut down in power I wouldnt worry about it. Its something about the routing of the exhaust that collects condensation in the cold weather.

Mine does this ( they all do...??).

After my initial concern I have come to enjoy it, putting down a smokescreen behind me, it always reminds me of the early James Bond films...!

Agreed, its particularly pleasing when someone is sitting as close as they can behind you. Stamp the foot down, puff of smoke and you're gone. Magical.

Sounds more like the Hogwarts Express :)

Good to hear this is normal :) I saw this from mine - the engine was warmed up, I never give too much throttle until the oil is over 85 degrees. Bit disconcerting first time it happens!

It's funny mine has never done this to me. Although I test drove a 230 estate once and it did it🤷‍♂️

Common on the petrol estates, the vertical rear window helps suck up the condensation out of the exhaust.

Does it on mine, every day until fully warm. 🙂

Hatch does it too - I don't worry about it now, initially it was a bit of a shock though first time I witnessed it.

My 245 doesn't puff out white smoke, perhaps I'm not driving it properly.   :shake:
