Drivers Wing Mirror Smashed

Featured Replies

Parked up at the weekend at the side of the road in a line of cars and came back half an hour later and somebody had driven past and hit the drivers wing mirror and smashed the glass and the painted plastic case.

Any ideas how much these parts are likely to cost?

Funnily enough ive just had this happen this morning! Some idiot decided to go round a bus pulling up at a stp while i was in the middle of my road trying to straddle the speed bump.

I now have a cracked door mirror and the plastic cover is broken:( Looks like its painted as well which is going to add to it. How ******* annoying.

So would like to know how easy it is to change the mirror and presumeably the painted cover could easily be replaced as it seems to be screwed to the black hinge mechanism.

Changing the Mirror part of the assembly is fairly easy, it just clips into the wing mirror assembly. I have been quoted around

I'm not being picky here, but don't you mean "Some sensible driver was legitimately in the middle of the road whilst overtaking a bus whilst I was in the middle of the road just to avoid a speed bump and wasn't observant enough to observe the fact they would likely overtake the slowing bus"?

Its their responsibility to see the road is clear. As a van driver there is nothing more annoying than buses holding you up but you have to wait till it is safe to perform a manouver.

Anyway if they wanted you to go over the whole bump they would make them stretch across the road and not just a p**sy little square

Slight brain to keyboard mistake and i get a slagging!

I think theres some confusion over what i wrote!

I was not in the middle of the road. I was in the middle of my lane or my road. The speed bumps are humps in each lane and i was going over the one in my lane so was in the middle of my lane.

It may have been early at the time, and i probably should have tried swerving but i was still tired and determined to hold my ground. Oh well...

Erm, back on subject. Thanks for the info on the parts, was going to ring up the local dealer to try and get them. I think if you got somebody to paint the professionally it would end up costing alot more. Think i'll see if i can get a can of paint. Thought might just change the mirror as i think the heating element is now on all the time. Does it just pull off? Do i need to remove the plastic mirror body? Think i'll have a go at the weekend.

Is the other guy paying for your mirror, spanner?

Dont you pay for each others damage in a both-at-fault bump, so he pays either way?

Speed bumps - werent these stubby ones originally for fire engines to straddle, cos they couldnt do speed over full width ones?

Thats because they are not designed for cars, but buses instead so they straddle them and don't throw the passengers standing everywhere.

Anyway presumably it was safe- although these cases are a mare. Sometimes the road has no centreline, in which you'd probably be at fault, or if it does, whoever was over on the wrong side is probably at fault. Then you add in hills...... I believe the police solution is book em both let the courts sort it out!

Well in theory yeah, but nobody stopped. At the time i just looked like the mirror folded back and cracked the mirror. It was only after driving to work did i see the plastic had a large crack in it. But to be honest for what it is, its not worth it claiming on the insurance when the excess is a few hundred quid.
