  • If you are EVER considering a towbar  make sure you tick the "tow bar prep" box as Kamiqs without this cannot be fitted with a towbar later (Dealers have been sent a memo about this)

That last bit is a BIG issue. I think there'll be may getting caught out especially in a year or so when the ex-demonstrators start going on sale, and it'll have been forgotten about.

This refers to the retrofitting of the OEM factory fitted towbar.

It will still be possible to fit an aftermarket / third party towbar to a Kamiq that wasn't built with tow bar preparation.

Similar confusion was caused with Skoda UK's communication when they launched the Karoq and Kodiaq.

With the likes of Broadspeed £5,500 of diesels and that and more off 1.5TSI's.

Pile them high and sell them cheap and even struggle to actually find buyers.

The Seat Leon is really good value at the moment  - I've noticed Drivethedeal etc have some great prices.

The problem for me is I don't get on with the seat (the bit you sit on - not the car!) as it's too narrow between the bolsters for my ample frame and somehow in this car when in a comfortable driving position my right elbow is two far back for the drivers door armrest. I found myself twisting in my seat after a while - this would do my back in on a long run. I have this problem in a lot of cars (it's my fathers fault!) as I'm 6ft 4" and like a laid back driving position. I seemed to be somehow OK in the Kamiq and Karoq. I also seem to be OKish in the Octavia as the seats suits me and somehow I don't have the same door armrest issue (I know it should be almost the same body platform!). Heaven for me is the Skoda Superb (large front door!) - but I'm eventually trying to downsize (no hurry for now) so the Kamiq is now on my future car short-list but for the moment I think it is too expensive for what it is.

Hmmm. Not quite what the PDF brochure says.

"*Tow bar or tow bar preparation must be fitted at factory in order to tow with this vehicle. No third party or aftermarket fitments are allowed."

I'd want further clarification on this before committing. (I only use the towbar for my bike carrier, but that's irrelevant.)

A typically nonsensical Skoda UK statement.

Taking their warning as gospel would suggest that even with towbar prep an aftermarket towbar "isn't allowed".

If you're able to get clarification from Skoda please let us know.

Skoda are not putting a big F-off sticker next to the Weights Plate or the build sticker saying , not factory prepared to be able to have a towbar or to tow.

They are still fitting the Weights plate to vehicles that left the factory without Factory Preparation.

I am in agreement with Silver1011 and Roottoot.

Quite possibly Skoda let the office junior play with cut and paste on the computer while the rest were out for lunch.

But TBH, I've never seen a similar warning in any other publicity material, and I do spend far too much time reading the small print. I've still got PDFs of every Octavia catalogue from 2014 on my computer. Sad.

I can't see what'd be so different about the Kamiq's rear end that'd warrant the prevention of professional towbar fitters doing what they've been doing for ages. I did actually watch my local fitter do the second one (I've had two Octavias). Rear bumper off, unbolt crossmember, bolt on new (Westfalia) crossmember, connect the electrics, put rear bumper back on, re-code the electronics. Job done. I've still got the old crossmember in my shed, and the Westfalia workshop instructions. Straightforward if you've got some experience, a set of decent spanners, and somewhere warm to work. Sadly, I don't have the third, and these days I'd sooner pay to watch someone do the job that do more damage to my back and knees after many years fettling my cars.

It's going to be a year or longer before I tire of my vRS and look to change, but next time I go for my free carwash at the local dealer I'll see if they can clarify this.

my SEL £2700 plus skoda £1250 dep and £289pm

Yes, I think the SEL is actually quite a bit cheaper than the SE + the options I want ! Partly because it's a package and partly because of higher residual so basically it would be back to being forced onto 18" wheels.

As pointless as comparing it to a Ferrari or a SEAT Mii. It's a different car so not having to compete.

I ran the Audi configurator but didn't want to go off at tangents as this thread is about the Kamiq. The most basic Audi DSG available was a 1.5 Tecknik so there's an issue in comparision straight away.  I put that up against a 1.0 DSG SE Kamiq which comes with more usefull things like LED lights which is an extra in an Audi. The Kamiq worked out approx £50 a month cheaper.

''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

Every car is different. But these two are very, very similar. It is not  pointless and you are missing the two points of my argument. Despite the letters on the badge they are both 5 seater family hatchbacks!

1. It looks almost identical side on to an A3 sportback. It doesn't have much more ground clearance and a narrower boot though 20dm more vol. It also is pretty much the same dimensions , 8mm wider, 72 mm shorter and has the identical engine and gearbox !!  They both have higher than average quality interiors. So how is that like a Ferarri or Seat Mii ??

Look at side by side pics on the excellent:- https://www.automobiledimension.com/car-comparison.php

2. It is no use just going on the Audi configurator. I am comparing real prices as of purchasing now. There is a £5.5k discount available on A3 sportback sport with DSG as opposed to less than £2.5k on the Kamiq. I costed the Audi on my options which don't require much on top of the Sport model.I had to cost the Kamiq as SE +options as I do not want 18" wheels. and it gets expensive. My figures are correct for my choice.

I fully accept that the Kamiq is a decent car but until the discounts kick in it is very expensive now for the options I want, especially compared to what really is the similar Audi that I have now. If I compare it to what I like the look of in that sector (more suv like), top of the range Renault Capturs, Peugeot 2008's,  Citroen Aircross etc it loses out massively on costs but they are lower quality in my opinion so the Audi was a fairer cost comparison for the above reasons.

From review on Parker's Guide website, 12/11/19 -

Wheel size makes a bit of a difference to comfort. But the good news here, is that even with the largest 18-inch wheels, the ride is really, really comfortable. The 17-inch items do a better job of insulating drivers from bumps. But you'd do well to notice a difference unless you drove a car with a set of both sized wheels back to back.

Looking at the dimensions of the Kamiq I see that height is 1531 mm and ground clearance is 171 mm, exactly the same as my Octavia Scout.

Between 2011 & 2017, ten Briskoda members secured 16" wheels on Yeti models that would otherwise have been supplied with 17" wheels.  (16" was standard on S models, 17" was standard on SE & SEL models).

Members did this by contacting Skoda UK who intercepted orders at the factory and arranged for special builds to be made.  Maybe potential Kamiq owners could secure 16" or 17" wheels on SEL models in the same way.

Re clearance.   'Sports Chassis Control'.   10 mm nearer to the ground as the bumff says and Journalists quoting from a Media Pack.

The usual Skoda confusion on published figures.

The height from ground to roof can not be the same if the car has lower suspension.

Under body protection can reduce clearance but obviously gives some protection, but adding it to a lower car is maybe what you need for mounting kerbs.

(Scala has an option of higher suspension

With the Kamiq they have the car,

then the car available with lower with Sports Suspension,

then the optional 'protection'.

You need to see the different cars and look straight under them from rear to front and see just what clearance there actually is and is it like

a Dacia Duster that can actually clear humps in the middle of tracks.

Just for fun I tried to match the spec of my 2018 Seat Arona Xcelence Lux 1.0tsi DSG

The Kamiq SE plus options to match spec is £29,015

The Kamiq SE-L plus options to match spec is £27,855

I ordered my Arona in 5th month on sale, got nearly £4K off so paid under £20k

Am I sad that I didn’t wait 18 months, and be expected to pay £8k to gain a Skoda badge on rear.  I think not, but it shows how the Kamiq is priced in la la land at launch.

Just as well then that if someone wants an Arona and not a Kamiq they can get one.

Thanks, Broadspeed hadn't started showing these so I will do some new costings now

.

I have had my most ugly comic (each to there own) Kamiq since Thursday 21/11 and what a surprise so refined. The 18in wheels you would not think you had them on more like 16s so smooth over speed bumps and no crashing or bottoming. Body roll is minimal. New informant is a lot better than Amunsden. The sound quality is a lot better more bass. seat comfort is a lot better its more soft.  The armrest is a load of rubbish no ratchet only pulls out so gets in the way of the gear stick and hand brake. would have been better with auto hand brake. meed to do more miles yet so i will see how we get on

Couple of comments on that:

1: The Arona, like most cars at launch, did not receive a £4k discount. I've already seen dealers reducing prices, but wait a few months and, depending on how sales go, similar incentives will be available on Kamiq, just like the Scala - that's a relatively new car and already attracting £4k discounts. If people are going to make comparisons then try and do it on a like-4-like basis.

2: The kamiq's feel of quality is a different class to the Arona, which in my humble opinion, is pretty naff.

I had to consider the Arona but.....the interior is so bland and has imo a pretty nasty dashboard arrangement ditto the T Cross

I avoided the SEL spec due to the fact that you have to use the touch screen to alter the climate control settings - a HUGE own goal, this something I would actively avoid. It's a disaster in Citroen's and I can't believe Skoda have gone down this route. I couldn't care less about only having a/c as it gives a simpler solution, I have to say I actually prefer this option to climate control (something I have on our Q3) as climate control never gets your feet warm enough in the winter and in summer creates masses of noise to make the cabin cooler when you first get in. So much easier to simply turn a couple of dials. But I'm there are people out there that have a different opinion.

I agree, hate systems which make life complicated. Any SE-L I've seen had a digital display for climate with two rotary knobs. I just assumed those knobs that controlled climate.

Gotta love Bob Flavin on youtube his review pointed this out.

you can adjust the temperature only all other settings are accessed via touch screen.

so if you want to clear the windscreen quickly or warm your feet or fresh air on your face it’s back to the menu. There is a menu button on the A/c controls Although BF said pressing the menu button on the a/c console didn’t bring up the menu in the screen!
