DSG - DQ200 reset

Featured Replies

I have an Octy Mk3 2016 1.6 TDI DSG 38k

I have noticed that when the car is moving slowly in traffic, releasing the brake and not using the throttle the car moves forward in 1st and then changes very quickly to 2nd. Sometimes when it is crawling forward in 2nd at 3-6 mph and the engine is idling I have noticed a slight judder, which goes away when power is applied. Also noticed a slight judder when reversing slowly. I'm not sure if it's normal or something to be concerned about. While reading up on the DQ200 seen some frightening stories of people getting 7k repair bills etc. My car has only 1 week of normal warranty left, so could be a bit of anticipatory post warranty anxiety on my part, but the thought of winding up with that kind of repair bill is making  poo come out! It's the first automatic I have owned and have only had it 3 months so still getting used to it.

I read online that it is possible to reset the gearbox, which can in some circumstances cure light juddering issues. The method someone described was to turn the ignition on (not start the engine) and then hold down the accelerator pedal to the floor for 30 seconds. They said that you can normally hear a click coming from the gearbox if this has been successful, but you have to start the engine immediately afterwards for this to work. Someone else posted that you follow the same method but then turn the car off before starting it. I have tried both these methods and can't hear any noise coming from the car to indicate anything is happening, just wondered if anyone had managed to successfully reset their gearbox, or experienced the same slight judder etc please? It maybe that I need to get it to the dealers to be inspected before the warranty runs out.

I do have an extended warranty plan (that came with the car purchased by the previous owner)  that came from motorpoint, but from reading the small print I suspect that if I did need to use it they would play every card in the deck to avoid having to pay out, and it's limited to 3k per claim.

Generally really happy with the car it drives lovely  and am loving the DSG for the most part. 😁

Get a dealer to check the judder and make a note of the issue before the warranty runs out.

Do you have any slip when changing gears or is it an instant change?

Clutch pack issues are well known and aftermarket warranties very rarely cover clutch failures.

I've had five DQ200's, four required clutch warranty work and the last one also a Mechatronic and two gear levers. Five weeks off the road, £5500 for the box and a grand each for the levers.

Needless to say my DQ200 days are over.

Thanks for your reply, there doesn't appear to be any slip between gears, but am going to ring dealer and get it booked in I think to be inspected.

Sounds like you have had really bad luck with the DQ200's - I'm hoping that mine turns out to be ok, I know that VW have produced and installed a lot of the units - saw a post saying over 2 million, but have in the past issued recalls in other countries but not in the UK.

Hi, I've got the 2014 1.4 TSi and it does get to 2nd gear very quickly on light throttle.  Typically this can bit a bit strange when you come to a junction or roundabout whilst still rolling (at only 1 or 2 mph) and then pull away again. In this instance the car will still be in 2nd gear and feels like it probably should have gone to 1st.

If you are in trip-tronic the car behaves differently and will put you in to 1st in this scenario.

When pulling away from a dead stop I find it changes to 2nd almost as soon as you are moving, say 2 or 3 mph (less than 1200 rpm) perhaps. 2nd to the other gears change around 2500 rpm. This is for the petrol of course, derv might have a different mapping for gear changes.

I do know what you mean about the slight judder, almost as if the car is beginning to stall out.....I've had this in 2nd when pulling away (when I would have preferred it to be in 1st) and in reverse. Both times it always recovers.

Overall though, If you give it plenty of throttle it holds on to 1st a lot longer before going to second.  Same with Sport mode, 1st for me is held till 3k rpm with 2nd and onwards held till 3500k rpm.

I'm really not sure on the bit about it learning your driving style. I've never noticed it change the behaviour. You could reset older VAG boxes with VCDS or change the behaviour of the box because I did this.

I even contacted RossTech about resetting the DQ200 but their knowledge was a little limited on resetting these boxes and they were not sure what if anything could be done either. Other boxes are different.

As for reliability, yes, it's a very mixed bag on reviews.  I've heard of a lot of stories on here with issues on the DQ200 boxes.  I guess with everything car part related you can be lucky or unlucky.  Our Fabia DQ200 is nearly on 50k miles now and touching all wood seems to be ok.

For that one there has always been a slight judder at times pulling away in 1st.  That has been there since pre 20k miles. I probably wouldnt fancy keeping DQ200 for 100k miles though some do last of course!

After an unwarranted dealer update to my DQ200 I had asked several tuning companies to roll it back to a factory version. I also enquired about the boxes longevity. A couple of tuners were fairly complementary about DQ200 with one even saying "From our years of experiencing tuning modern VAG vehicles we have found the DQ200 gearbox is completely safe up to 320 nm. In fact we have some heavily modified vehicles running 390 nm out of this gearbox, however we do not advise that, although for now they seem to be coping. "

Anyhow, during my time of searching if I could reset the box back to learn my style I was never successful in finding a way. The dealer told it their update would adapt to my style but in nearly 1000 miles it never did.

So overall I say enjoy it for now and don't worry too much. It could break like any other engine part (turbo, DPF and EGR are other classics that break) or it could keep going and going.  It's a shame the DSG's are so expensive to fix - that's the main kicker!
