Thinking of audio upgrade - amp, speakers, wiring

Featured Replies

Hi

I've got a 65 plate Fabia colour edition I purchased in April this year.

I have tried to find information or experiences on audio upgrades on mk3 Fabia but not much luck; I believe folks don't do this much anymore. I am thinking of component speakers in front, possibly a small sub, and a DSP equipped amp to drive it all. This is still a study to understand how much work and money is needed, not decided yet if I go for it. I have done something similar 15 years ago on a then-old car so this is 20+ years newer car and quite different. I am an audio and electronics guy but know almost nothing about cars or even their electronics these days.

For now I am trying to gather information before tearing anything down.

I have a few questions in mind, if anyone could point me to good sources would be great. Guides with photos even better.

  • I want to keep the original head unit, I have the one with touch screen and Android Auto. Are there line level outputs at all or do I need to deal with speaker outputs? I wonder if speaker output have flat response or if there is always-on EQ or compressor effects (e.g. bass roll-off at high volume setting)? If I don't find this info anywhere I need to try to measure it.
  • Any tips how to get to the head unit wiring? I've seen photos of a separate unit from the display, somewhere behind glovebox? Pinout or wiring diagram would be great.
  • Do you know if temporarily disconnecting the head unit can cause any problems in the car?
  • Amp power wire; I know this is a pain. Tips where to get it from the engine compartment to inside? I found a post regarding mk2 Fabia advising to follow bonnet release cable.
  • Door speakers. There are a woofer and tweeter in front. Do these come separately from the head unit or is there a simple passive crossover somewhere (maybe at tweeter only)?
  • Is existing speaker wiring ok, and how tricky it would be to replace it?

If I decide to do this, I will share information how I did it and take lots of photos.

MK3 stereo i have not messed with but in the MK2 which is similar 'shell car' , this had the original 'Skoda Dance' and supported a sub, unplugging - replugging stereo may require re-coding. I never plugged the 'skoda dance' back in and swapped to Android Head Unit with speakers on parcel shelf first then later a sub in the boot.

I think you will find wiring speakers to parcel shelf first is the best option and takes up no space in the boot, all quick release fittings. I didnt do the work took it to a pro audio garage...
