Winter tyres and TPMS

Featured Replies

Hi,

Winter snow will soon be upon us in Switzerland, so time to get winter wheels and tires setup.

I'm looking at 2 options - go VAG official route - for 17" black wheels and conti tyres I'm looking at ~£1500. Or go non-VAG, get a set of wheels I prefer look of, plus conti tyres for a few hundred quid cheaper.

Only thing I'm concerned about is the tyre pressure monitoring system. I assume the standard summer tyres have "smart" valves fitted that transmit tyre pressure via RF? Or is it an indirect, simple system that monitors rolling circumference?

I've been told by third-party garage that the TPMS may need to be disabled, and of course will cost a few hundred extra! Every time I swap the wheels! I dont know if the VAG official winter wheels will have smart valves fitted?

Grateful for feedback on this, many thanks.

Edit - Just looking at the manual (!), p. 252, which says:

The system can only function properly if the tyres have the prescribed inflation
pressure and these pressure values are stored in the system.
Always save the tyre pressure values in the system if one of the following
events occurs.
▶ Change of tyre pressure values.
▶ Change one or more wheels.
▶ Change in position of a wheel on the vehicle.
▶ The warning light in the instrument cluster.

This would suggest I can change wheels and only need to tell the system to store new tyre pressure values (dont know how it works that out, but anyway...).

Can anyone confirm or say otherwise?  Thanks!

Škoda use the ABS sensors for the TPMS so any wheels are fine

@Gizmo That's awesome mate, good to have confirmation and know I wont be wasting a few hundred every year on this, thanks very much!

Forget the OEM 17"s. I just got a nice setup shipped to me from Germany: 18" TUV certified alloys in glossy black wrapped in Vredestein Wintrac Pro 235/45/18, for 2/3 of the price Skoda is asking for bl00dy 17" and looking miles better. I need to wash the car before I take any decent photos but I can PM you the details if you're after new wheels. It's quite a PITA to find a good-looking but also reasonably priced winter setup and not drop to 17".

That would be great if you can PM the details fella, awesome of you!

Not decided when to fit the winter yet but when I got my Superb in 2016, I bought a set of 16" steel wheels fitted with Goodyear Ultragrip performance for £500.

I just set the pressure as per Skoda manual/sticker on filler flap

@newbie69 Post photos on here for all to see!

I will, i will, I just need to stop postponing the washing  :notme:

Hey all,

After visiting local wheel shop ended up going for these - MSW 71, gloss black, 18", to be fitted with contis.

https://www.ozracing.com/alloy-wheels/msw/avantgarde/msw-71

Thanks to @newbie69 I could have got a better deal saving a few hundred on another set, but they dont deliver to Swiss, so would have had to hassle a friend in France.

In the end got a set of nice 18 inchers with contis that look not too dissimilar to the summer nova wheels currently on, for the same price as VAG were offering for ugly 17".  Plus the local wheel shop was very helpful, and will store my summer wheels, so happy to give them the business.

Will post a pic here when they are fitted.

Thanks again @newbie69 :)

Just a quick note that catches people out.

In the UK if you have a TP monitor system fitted from factory then it has to work to pass an MOT so you need to swap tyres on same rims or remember to swap your tyre values to winter rims and back again

Guess you didn't read Gizmo's post from about 6 hours ago then?

It is good to know though as I'd previously specced a car with 'proper' tyre monitoring and also fitted winter wheels without the built in sensors. If that car had needed an MOT in winter...........

Fair point, but it would have been clearer if he/she had written "anyone, unlike in this case, who has a direct, pressure-measuring TP monitor system fitted from factory..."

Both types have to work to pass MOT on cars built from 2012> IIRC, but only the direct type will involve a faff with valve changes etc. if different wheels are fitted.

:)

As @Gizmo said. No specific sensor in tyre valves. Only ABS rotation speed sensors to detect any rotation speed difference from on wheeel to another. The one spinning faster is ht one with pressure loss!

I've bought 17" winter wheels by my Skoda local dealer few weeks after delivery and had Continental ContiWinterContact TS850P mounted on the at a tyre station for something like ~1500€ almost 2 years ago. I've put winter wheels on yesterday, to start their 3rd winter season. No problem at all with TPMS. ;)
