Annoying trim rattle rear passenger side

Featured Replies

Another annoying rattling that's really starting to pi$$ me off. 95% sure it's some kind of loose trim, rather than mechanical issue.

my door card was loose, which I thought was the problem. Refitted it today, all went smoothly, just been out for a drive and it's still there. Seems to be even worse, but that could be that I'm fuming it's still making a noise.

ive had the pillar trim off; found an assortment of screws down then, refitted it - no difference. The end Under the door is slightly loose, but not enough to see how it would be making so much noise.

parcel shelf "bracket" - it is slightly loose screwed into the body works, but again not enough to warrent the amount of noise present. Will screw it back in tommorow.

will empty bits out the boot tommorow, check spare wheel, and try taping pillar trim down, and checking underneath the seat.

where else can I look for the problem

Headrests, loose seat belt, rattling seat lock, parcel shelf loose (you mentioned the bracket is slightly loose, which may or may not warrant the parcel shelf itself vibrating and making noise), lower C-pillar trim near the seat and even the boot trim. My boot trim is missing some clips, something I will address in the next few days. Plenty of things that can get loose, and no worries whatsoever from factory regarding hard plastic getting in contact with bare metal or more hard plastic. Some felt washers between clips or nuts and surfaces would help I guess. I don't know how to address those rattles and their cure, and love my car, but the amount of noise the interior makes - and the whole lot of road and ambient noise it lets in - is driving me crazy. Turning the interior to pieces to slather it in foam or any other insulating material would be expensive and tiresome, at which point buying a more refined car would be better.

Thanks few more things to be thinking about. I've checked the boot trims and they all seem solid

I fitted sound-proofing material to the whole of the boot area and under the back seat. Also stuffed the rear quarters with polyester batting. Made a big difference to road noise.

Great, thanks.

Outer lower fixings of the seat backrests are a sprung clip which works loose on mine and rattles. the backrest needs a firm downward thump to locate it.

This is the way to go..

I just did sound deadening with the bitumen style sheets and proofing with camping mat style sheets to the whole car as had to pull up the carpet thanks to leak.

Would say it’s not worth it except engine bay and under rear seats and boot wheel arches which are all the easiest places to get to. The whole carpet area made no difference whatsoever.

Mines still noisy, blaming tyres for now but know it’s not going to make much difference. Would agree juanse if cabin noise is your priority / going to drive you insane get a different car.

Wench get someone in the car with you to climb around while you’re driving listening prodding and covering stuff until you find out what it is.

So I had a really good look this morning. I screwed the spare tyre tool kit down as much as it would go, and gave it a shake, didn't sound like the noise I was getting. Checked the rear seat "clipping" mechanism, looks ok but put some wd40 on it, and tried to screw up the rubber stop. Put the pillar trim back as much as I could.

Potential suspect areas: some of the plastic underneath the seat (when lifted up) is broken. Shoved some cardboard underneath it to try and pad it out until I can get some rubber or something to do a better bodge fix. However suspect this isn't the real problem; the seat read drivers side has a similar issue and makes a totally different noise to the one I was getting.

Looked at the parcel shelf bracket - I've only got the tools on me to do up one of the screws. I looked at the area where the parcel shelf slots onto the bracket, and there are signs of "strained" plastic (where it goes all pale). I made sure the parcel shelf was well into its holder.

went out for a drive, it was certainly better than yesterday. I am going to see if I can get a parcel shelf bracket from a scrap yard and go from there

Yeah, most of the road noise seems to come from the back. The only other thing I did was to buy the under-bonnet sound deadening pad from a vRS which made a suprising difference to engine noise. More muffled.

Check vent flaps in spare wheel compartment/to bumper side. Flaps dries out with time and makes nasty sound when air pumps out. If so, spray them with silicone.
