How to tell 230 or 245

Featured Replies

Forgive my ignorance, but as the title suggests how can you tell if a VRS is a 230 or 245?

My brother in law has asked me to go look at a facelift petrol vRS estate but I s there an obvious way of knowing, just so they don’t try pulling a fast one saying it’s one or the other.

It was so much easier buying my oil burner!🙈

Easiest way I find is black exhaust tips.

Many "standard" vRS have black pack + options, but AFAIK only the "special" ones (pre-fl 230, fl 245, challenge) have black exhausts.

Unless they have been painted :)

Exhaust tips will 99% say if it's a 230 - if they are silver, but them being black doesn't guarantee a 245.

For starters, stick the registration in something like TotalCarCheck - before you pay for a full check it'll give you info like this:

Manufacturer Skoda
Model Octavia Vrs 245 Tsi S-A
Colour White
Vehicle Type Car
Fuel Type Petrol
Engine Size 1984cc
Euro Status 6b
BHP

245 BHP

My 245 has silver exhaust tips, front grill, window surrounds, roof rails and Gemini wheels.

...because I like shiny bits and that’s the way I ordered it!

My 245 has shiny exhaust tips, as standard from the factory.

I think he's talking about the proper 245s 😁

All silver exhaust tips tell you is that it's not a launch edition 245 or a 245 Challenge.

It could well still be a regular 245bhp vRS.

^^ This. ^^     and 245's have the little wheel arch extensions on the rear wheel arches, N/S at 2 o clock , O/S at 10 o clock  the 220/230/ didn't have these as standard

That is all

Awesome thank you for that, I use the Vehicle Smart app usually but BHP isn’t one of the things it shows so this is great to know.

Thanks everyone else for your responses too. 👍

Oh in case anyone is interested...it’s a very well equipped 230.

Unfortunately, not correct. The FL 230 (and even the 184 2.0TDI I think) got those too, as it was facelift change, rather than a 245 change.

If the big hand is pointing to the six it's 230. If it's pointing to nine it's 245. HTH :)

Indeed. The arch extensions were as a result of the wider rear track on the facelift models.

For reference of anyone who wants to check when at a car..

Only the pfl230 and fl245 have the vaq differential.

When in the car, press the vRS button, select 'individual' on the infotainment, see if there's an option to change the front differential lock.

Open the driver's door and look at the sticker at the bottom of the B-pillar.  Engine code CHHA is 230PS/169kW, codes CHHB, DLBA, DKTB are 245PS/180kW.

Is it a DSG the original 245 has a 7 speed box while the 230 only had 6

I'll correct that for you  "Engine code CHHA left the factory with a minimum of 230PS/169kW, codes CHHB, DLBA, DKTB left the factory with a minimum of  245PS/180kW." 😍

As most with decent fuel will be higher than that on a RR - plus of course some have been remapped

How to tell 230 or 245?

Having passed a fellow Octavia owner this afternoon, just south of the Queensferry Crossing, I noticed the owner had put the numbers 2, 4 & 5 in front of the vRS badge on the back. Simples...🤣

Apologies if it is anyone on here!

I’ll need to keep my eyes peeled for that one.

If there's only one real exhaust pipe behind the trims then it's a diesel. 😁

Another simple one no one has mentioned.. all proper 245s have larger ventilated rear discs ;) 230s only have non ventilated smaller rear discs

Adding to the clues about checking infotainment for VAQ diff on driving modes, 7th Gear if a DSG.

Good shout on the door code sticker above too.
