About to buy 2017 Octavia 1.6 Diesel... should i reconsider due to Water Pump issue?

Featured Replies

So i'm about to move from my 2015 petrol Fabia, which i have had no issues at all with for 4 years, and was going to stick to Skoda and buy a 2017 Octavia estate 1.6l Diesel... however having read the water pump thread i'm wondering if I should look at something else?

Is the issue so prevalent that its a matter of when not if the waterpump will go?   Or are the guys with the issue just a small unfortunate minority among thousands more with no issues?

I haven't had any problems with my water pump yet! But it concerns me if l decide to hang onto the car out of warranty. The guys with the issues are probably a .... small unfortunate minority but be sure all Skoda owners don't post on Briskoda. Buying a car out of warranty or not knowing if the pump has been changed is something you want to take into consideration.

On your choice of 1.6, try out a 2.0 would be my advice before you choose a diesel.

I've not heard of the problem on the 1.6 tdi, only heard of it on the 2.0 tdi & mostly the VRS model

Well then dec67 you'll be okay with the 1.6 in that case.

And to be honest the water pump issue primarily effects the early models. My 2014 suffered it at around 35k miles. Its replacement did 50k and was only replaced as I was doing the cambelt at 5 years.

Primarily maybe, but certainly not exclusively. My 2016 vRS TDI had it go at about 40k miles.

No issues with mine so far at 34K......

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah looking at the water pump thread there are more 2.0l that 1.6l with problems and they do seem to be mostly 2015 or before. However i suppose that could influenced by newer ones generally not having the miles on them yet

The 1 I'm looking at has just over 30k on it and about 6 months warranty left, I think i might go ahead and get it but set aside a few quid for a possible replacement as if its part of the initial cost

Water pump failure is not hugely expensive or catastrophic provided you don't let it suffer from overheating.

and in the case of the 2L TDI, it is not a really a pump failure rather the sleeve which regulates the flow.

When the sleeve is closed, coolant can still pass although not in the volumes required to maintain 80° which limits the possibility for real engine damage as long as you dont continue at load while the error is present.

I drove my car with regularly intermittent errors for about a month before it was changed although there were some people who reported the problem a couple of times & then became perminent.
