Quick question, does anyone know if the VW Data Plug is compatible with Skodas and the Skoda Connect Lite App?  Quite a few on ebay and if they are I'll pick one up for my Octavia MkIII.

I tried one of the VW Data plugs both in my Fabia (2009) and Audi A6 (2017), neither would allow it to work or connect.

Are there advantages to using Connect Lite with a data plug over using Skoda connect through a phone or sim card?

I’ve just ordered one for £5 from eBay. Didn’t see this post, I guess I’ll be paying £40 for one from ŠKODA.

I genuinely thought they’d be the same product.

They may well be except for firmware.

My VW Data Plug arrived today and it works fine with the Skoda Connect Lite app... £4.99 from HERE

information on the Skoda Connect Lite app HERE

I can also confirm that the VW Data plugs work as I have just set up a spare one which my daughter got with her VW Up

Thanks for the heads up, got mine yesterday. Plugged it in at it worked immediately.

The Skoda lite app is far better than the others and is quite fun too.

An absolute bargain @ £4.99 (Inc p&p)!

Thanks for all the replies - grabbed one myself last week and can confirm it works very happily with the Skoda Connect Lite App.

I know this is an old topic but I've been trying to get mine to connect to my new Mk iv, it connects straight away and goes through the different stages but just stalls on the 'initialising' stage no matter how long I leave it trying to finish setup. I do get a message about sharing mobile data but it disappears very quickly and I've gone through all the onboard settings to see if I need to enable something but can't see anything that jumps out at me.

Can anybody shed any light on anything that I need to do at all? Thanks.

Just bought VW Data Plug for £4.75 on eBay to use in 2016 Skoda Octavia.  Plugged in and worked without any problem whatsoever since its exactly the same part.  Skoda price for the same device is £40.  Bonkers!!!

Arh - welcome to the dodgy Firmware problems of Skoda Connect Lite / VW dongle.  They DO NOT work properly out of the box.

You have to be persistent.  It took me 3 attempts at my mother-in-law's Fabia, but it eventually took.  Here are the things I had to do.

1) Switch off any power saving modes you may have switched on.  This knackers up the initial communication with the dongle.  Please remember, you have to have the ignition on / engine on whilst the car is connecting and upgrading the firmware.

2) If you get a failed - initialisation - be patient; then delete the pairing and the dongle, and try again.  You need to be in a situation where the firmware of the dongle is allowed to be upgraded (I think from 9.0.5.0 to 9.0.8.0), then the app will start querying the car and downloading the matrices.

3) When you are done and eventually you get the phone paired and the car communicates, go into Settings and go into "Making a phone call when the hands-free system" - and enable "Hands-free-mode".  This means you can allow the phone to talk to the dongle and the car MIB system at the same time.

PM me if you need further help.

Thank you so much, that's really helpful. I shall have another go tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

Appreciate your help.

I eventually got my £11 genuine VW (via Amazon) dongle paired using Connect Lite. Went round the houses with repeated attempts at logging in. Gave up. Today it has connected and updated firmware. Not sure what usefulness it has as yet.

Must try  pairing with the MIB system again- but only for music. It scared the willies out of me when a phone call came over the stereo..
