Sticking Clutch pedal, inoperative clutch.

Featured Replies

I own a 2011 140 Yeti 4x4,  This is my second Yeti but my first 4x4. A few months ago after covering some 90,000 miles the  clutch pedal would sometimes  remain in the depressed position when released, the a quick lift with the toe would cure the problem. the problem became more and more frequent, there was no loss of traction, but the pedal would occasionally require a pump or two to engage reverse gear.  Interestingly there was no loss of fluid. from the master cylinder or slave cylinder.

The clutch was bled to test if the master cylinder worked, the fluid expelled was blackish in colour, which I assumes to be a seal breaking down somewhere in the system, ( a common problem with the ageing Minis and Escorts I used to run in my younger days).

Step 1  Clutch bled new fluid in system, OK for a few days then the problem reoccurred, again no loss of fluid simply an inoperative clutch.

Step 2  Plan B , Replacement of the slave cylinder, OOOps, the concentric type, hmmm.

Step 3 Having replaced the clutch on my previous 2wd  Yeti and the kind assistance and loan of lift at a friends workshop, gearbox removed, new clutch fitted even though the original clutch was pretty good I did not want to carry out this operation again in the near future. Bolt everything back, Success!!!!!!!!!!!!!,  Drove brilliantly.

Step 4, Some 3500 miles later, it's back , inoperative clutch same symptoms as before. The only parts I have not replaced is the hydraulic line from the master cylinder to the slave, could this be the source of my woes, a hydraulic pipe breaking down internally, ( I have seen this happen before, but  not in recent years) .  I am  told there is a valve on the clutch line on some vehicles to assist with smoother clutch operation, and  this valve can be bypassed as is the norm on track day cars.  I don't know if my car is fitted with such a device, ( it is now dark and very wet, so a quick look is out of the question).

Has any body else experienced a similar problem?

As a footnote I did purchase a download workshop manual  that shows up on my computer as a download but every time Itry to access it, i find an incorrect address message on the screen, hmm.

Is the master cylinder reservoir cap air vent clear?

I would like to add here that when I purchased the car it came with a fully stamped main dealer service history,

I was intrigued by your suggestion so I popped out to investigate, I unscrewed the reservoir cap and replaced it , lifted the pedal manually depressed it a couple of times again having to raise the pedal manually, just to be sure I repeated the process of opening the reservoir  cap and depressing the clutch, still had to manually raise the clutch.  I will investigate the cap vent for blockages after work tomorrow .

Interesting point though as the hydraulic fluid we originally bled out of the system was black and did look emulsified, but this fluid had since been flushed through with new fluid on the original master and slave, once again on replacing the master then a third time after the new slave and clutch fitted.

I have just been reading about a similar occurrence in another post to which you contributed, and co incidentally I had just replaced the brake pads on both axles not long after the clutch.
