Auto Start / Stop - Disable - using Carista - MY20

Featured Replies

It is very easy to disable the stop start feature using a diagnostic tool if you choose to.

A setting related to the battery voltage is adjusted, fooling the car into thinking the battery capacity is below the threshold that would ordinarily prevent the engine from stopping.

We're all wired differently but something in my mind automatically tells me to hit the stop/start disable button, usually as I approach the first junction or stationary traffic after setting off.

I could change it to a max of 12.1V but I can't see this  inhibiting the S/S as the minimum voltage is well above this even at idling speeds, I have read that people set it at 15/16v but this isn't allowed using VCDS on a Jan 2019 Polo at any rate.

It is definately doable, it has been covered in quite a lot of detail over in the MkIII Octavia and Superb pages.

I'll dig some of the more detailed threads out when I'm back in front of my PC rather than on my phone.

On the MY19 and earlier - no issue with Carista - MY 20 and you can no longer do it.... as per original post..  maybe VCDS?  but Carista - No

Even Kufatec the German company that do the disable dongles for many vehicles do no do one yet for the MY 20 - so I suspect that the settings are locked - so they can not be turned off.

Try seeing if there's the adaptation channel 'EM_start_stop_requirement_ambient_temperature' or something like that and adjusting the temp to like 50c or something.

I only have Carista - and its not that type of thing with it - its basically a series of menus you click through to turn on and off things..

On 19 MY there was options for adjusting the battery voltage for the stop/start - but that is not coming up on the MY20.

That's why VCDS or OBDeleven etc. are more useful as you can directly alter the coding, but you need to know what you're doing as it is possible to really screw things up.

Carista is far safer and designed to be more user intuitive but is much more limited as a result.

That's very interesting, my daughter's diesel VW Tiguan does have to reach temperature but the next time I see her I will see note the parameters with the VCDS.

Yesterday, VCDS showed no reference to the coolant temperature playing any part in the S/S philosophy, but this Tiguan's S/S will not operate until this temperature is near or at normal, coincidence??

It depends how old the Tiguan is.

The same applied to Skoda's, not that long ago the stop/start would not activate until the coolant was up to normal operating temperature.

This has now changed, probably in the pursuit of ever more stringent emissions standards, the stop/start will activate before the coolant reaches the normal operating temperature.

Some might argue the methods being used to hit these stricter emissions standards are to the detriment of component longevity.

It is widely accepted that the vast majority of engine wear occurs whilst the engine is cold. Having the stop/start feature in operation right from the offset in subzero temperatures could mean that during some journey types the engine might never get up to temperature, therefore exposing itself to increased wear.

No doubt the manufacturers are taking steps to combat the issue, lower viscosity oils (VW508.00 0W20) for example, but these themselves have potential adverse consequences on component life of their own.

Its a 2016 model and even though I can't find any reference to the coolant temp it does reach normal temp before operating.

Can someone post a reference to any vehicle with a reference to the coolant temperature influencing the S/S?.

Accepting that the S/S is primarily designed to reduce emissions, I find it difficult to imagine that a cold engine will emit less emissions than a warm engine over the same time period,

2016 was Euro 6 and pre WLTP / RDE.  The testing has changed, the only emissions that they cared about was during testing. They cheated those in Euro 5 and even some early Euro 6.

My 2016 2.0 TDI SCR / DSG SEAT stop / start would shut down on mornings below freezing after reversing 6 feet from my parking space as long as the better was good and the heating was not set more than 16*oC above the ambient temp, which it was not as i had the heating off.

Nothing a post-it note can't solve!

It has been proved in under 2 weeks people don’t see a permanent notice as it is just part of their surroundings.

What?

What?

He means that 2 weeks after putting a post it note in the car, it will become part of the furniture and will fail to be noticed.

He has a point, but if it's made bright enough and placed where it can't be missed, then it should work.

On the other hand, who wants post it notes stuck to the interior of the car.

I agree with what Silver 1011 wrote a few posts back.

i wouldn't mind start-stop if mine had the bark of an RS 3

A mouse very kindly bit through my cable.  Now it's permanently off!

If only I could now get rid of the annoying message ;)
