TPMS light on

Featured Replies

Hello

First time TPMS light came on yesterday , from what Ive read its not a tyre pressure check it parts of the ABS that monitors wheel rotation ?

Any way checke tyre pressure all 4 tyres are 27psi , so had lost a bit of air not checked since I bought it 6 months ago  ( my bad ) , set back up to F 33psi & R 30 psi

Reset TPMS after pumping up tyres now cleared

Just wondering if the cause for the TPMS lighting up was the lower than recommended tyre pressures ( -6 psi ) will keep an eye on pressures in case there is a slow puncture but no pressure loss so far

Almost certainly; it warns you about soft tyres but does nothing else, so you really should check them...

Yup... that pressure drop will be enough to affect the radius and thus the speed of rotation the abs is getting.

I never realised that was how the TPMS on the Citigo worked.

I wonder if the system is looking for a difference in rotational speed between the wheels, or against a calculated value.

i.e. if it lights because at some point 3 tyres are giving one reading and the remaining 1 is different, or it lights because at the speed you are travelling it knows what the reading should be (having set a baseline just after the reset button was pressed) and notes that one or more is different.

You can fit a spare wheel that is a slight different circumference, reset the TPMS and get no warning because that is how you set it to then log.

Same as if you have an odd pressure set in one or 2 tyres.  It is happy enough.

The system really is as basic as it comes and is the same as was introduced to warn drivers of Run Flat tyred cars that one tyre had punctured.

As the OP has discovered, the pressures can drop evenly and no warning.

The warning might not come up as tyres get unsafely low, and then one tyre might start overheating and then the pressure in that tyre goes odd one out and you get a warning.

Same can happen with a binding brake, it is that wheel so also the tyre getting hot that can give you a warning from the TPMS.

You check the tyres cold and the pressures seem fine, but you drive again, have a brake overheating and get a warning again.

Mine has come on a handful of times and is a complete pain as initially when it pops up you assume you've got a puncture or something and quickly pull over. Every time I've checked tyre pressures and they're all still fine. The only link I've found is in each case it being a cold day and it comes on after 20 or so miles when your tyres have really warmed up and I guess the air inside has expanded altering the pressure. If I could disable it I would.

Simple.

Since the tyres pressures are supposed to be set cold, and all cars tyres heat up, and some like drivers side front maybe slightly more and no warning given.

If you get a warning then check all 4 tyres pressures when hot.

With a £1.99 digital fridge thermometer you can check the tyres temperature.  or the heat at the hub.

No real need for this, I know why the warning light comes on, the tyres have heated up and that is the only reason. It is far too sensitive on my Citigo 😞

Every driver of a Citigo today will have the tyres heat up, and not all will then get a TPMS warning.

They have a problem free system that will allow for this happening, where as one that is over sensitive is a PITA, and basically not working as designed.

Did you ever reset the system? Should be done every time you check the pressures.

There is tolerance. Normal heating of tyre does not give warning.

But if there is moisture in abc sensor it sometimes give false alarm. Happened to me maybe 3-4 times during 6 years driving Citigoes.

Resetting the system is the only way to put the warning light out. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with the tyre pressures, just an over zealous sensor ;)

You should check pressures at least once in a month anyway.

Bought my Citigo new in March 2019.Tps has given me no problems, and warning light never comes on falsely.

However,I have found that alloy wheels factory fitted, can loose 2-3 pounds of air in a fortnight. So I check pressures at least every two weeks. All tyres need a visual inspection at least monthly for your own safety -your only contact with the road! Only takes a few minutes......

I would be having the Dealer get those tyres beads taken off the rim and the tyres re-inflated.

That is a crazy amount of pressure loss.   Something not right there, but to have 4 bad valves would be an odd one.

Even the crappiest of old porous alloys might not lose air that quick.

Oxygen comes thru rubber. But maybe not that much. 🤔

Everydays a school day , never bothered checking citigos tyres as thought that TPMS was a actual low pressure guage so if not lit pressures all ok

Will check tyre pressures monthly

Cheers Steve
