Kamiq Ambition + Admunsen Road Sign Recognition ?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

new here from Switzerland with my Kamiq Ambition 1.0 / 115 CV / manual 6 gear.

I do have:  Amundsen + Navi + Virtual cockpit + Lane Assist + Front Assist (speed and distance) etc etc ...

On the Navi and on the separated widget I can see the road signs (speed limit, wet road, etc) only if I enable Navi > Road Sign > Show on navi map.

Then I may also select to show the speed limit alarm when +5km/h ...

If I turn OFF the <show on map> option, no road sign will never be shown .... even if the I go trough a real road sign during my trips ...

So I suspect that the Speed Limits and other signs are stored on the Navi database and not read directly from the road using the front camera ! Should be this true ???

Or do I need to activate some kind of other options to enable <real road signs> recognition ??

Other Skoda models seem to use the camera to read actual Road Signs.

After some hours of googling, I feel a bit frustrated !! hihihih

Many thanks for any info !! Cheers Pietro

In UK on Kodiaq and Karoq - the Actual Road Signs are only read if you selected this as an option at point of ordering - not many models have it as standard.

I am not sure for Switzrland or Kamiq - but suspect its the same as Karoq and Kodiaq where you needed to have paid extra.

However - normally they can be activated by VCDS or coding with OBD11 or similar.

We also do not have the speed warning options when above limit (just limit sign) in our UK Nav on Kodiaq or Karoq.

Sorry can not help specifically for Kamiq..

You could also contact Kufatec and see if their dongle for the T-Roc would work on the Kamiq... as they are similar cars?

They do not list one at the minute for Kamiq..

Hello Skoda1982 !!

Many many thanks for all your answer and suggestions !!

But please, usually in Switzerland we don't speak Swedish ! Hihihihi ... You may choose at least between German, French and Italian. Fortunately, I can speak both, and what you can see and read in my images is Italian !! Excuse me, I'm really joking.

Well, as far as I understand, you do have this option on your car (Kamiq) and you pay extra for.

- Would you please explain where / what you see on Nav and on cluster panel (or virtual cockpit as in my case) ?

- Would you please explain / show what kind of menu are you using to enable/disable this feature (if possible) ?

Might be that couple of images should be better than 100 words !

Again, thank you for your patience !

Cheers, Pietro

Hi @Pietro62

Did you ever get it sorted ? Did the garage activate it ?

I got a Kamiq end of August from "Amag" (since you're Swiss as well you know that they are the official importer of Skoda for Switzerland)  and the Road Sign Recognition is supposed to be part of the delivery but I don't have more information that what you get and I think this is wrong.

The user manual shows the "Virtual Cokpit" displaying the road signs as well as warning if speed limit is reached but I don't think this is enabled in my car.

Thank you for any information. I'm already in touch with the sales guy and he opened a "ticket" with Skoda "product specialist", I'm expecting an answer but if you solved this issue then I could just point him to the solution :)

Hello chli, ciao !

Well, actually not yet ! When I bought the car (december 2019) the vendor say "yes it's fitted with TSR, as soon as you leave AMAG garage and go on the road, you will see a speed symbol on your display !"
So, I have no time to discuss with the vendor, explaining that those symbols are coming from "Navi maps" and not from the front camera. So lot of confusion here ...
I leave in Ticino, with lot of works on highway and other roads and as you know, it's very confusing to see 120 - 100 - 80 and even 60 km/h changing every kilometer .... (and the sign on map stay at 120 )  ufffffffffff ....... !!
But I saw that the latest Kamiq depliants show clearly that (some) model are fitted with a real TSR, read sign from the front camera (used also for other things, such mantaining center of the lane etc...).

I will ask the same AMAG garage (or maybe another one ...) about this and how much it will cost for updating / installing the feature, but I will not surpised if it will cost a lot !! $$$ !!!

If you have any news, please let me know !

BTW, my Kamiq 1.0 is just a fantastic car ... 9000km till now !

Ciao, Pietro

Hi Pietro62,

Thank for passing by :)

I have a Kamiq, latest model (07/2020) with all the safety feature and Traffic Sign Recognition but... I don't get more than would you have. That means I can only get the information in a "widget" on the "home" screen or on the navigation screen of the Amundsen. At the moment I can't get the info as a "alarm" on the Virtual Cockpit if I drive faster than the detected speed or get the traffic signs shown on the virtual cockpit.

I contacted by garage and gave them the link for the following skoda video :

https://www.skoda-auto.com/world/kamiq-videos

Which shows what I would expect... (and yes I know the demonstration video is shown on a Scala).

I also gave them a screenshot of the user manual (p.59 for french and german, p.55 in english) :

https://manual.skoda-auto.com/223/fr-CH/Model/Kamiq_NW4/07-2020/fr

Which shows the traffic signs being displayed on the Virtual Cockpit...

Here is the answer I got (translated from French) :

Quote

Thank you for your enquiry.

I have analysed this with Mr ****** and we find that indeed on the manual and in the skoda.com video the traffic signs are shown on the virtual cockpit whereas in reality this is not the case.
The signs are displayed, if recognised, on the GPS.

We have informed the importer and are waiting for an answer if there will ever be an update that includes this function.

If this is not the case we will ask them to modify this information on these media.

On the Karoq, Kodiaq and Superb models the panels are displayed on the virtual cockpit.
I am afraid that Skoda has used the same visual material without noticing this detail.

We will keep you informed as soon as we receive information.

Sounds like false advertising to me !

Just realised I have quite a few typos and this forum doesn't allow editing... sorry about that!

Mine is the same - just has signs found in the gps navi maps. I've tried to enable the function with vcds using some of the guides for other vag recent mbq based vehicles as a guide, however I can't get the camera adaptations to code correctly, but was able to have the option available on the settings screen, and now an error message on the virtual cockpit telling me here's an error - until I do more research or disable the option again, I've found some info elsewhere on the internet relating to vw & skoda using a camera with limited software.

I read someone was successful on a Scala but I don't want to "play" with programming tools.

Hi Chli and Stevie D,

thanks for all hints ! Yes, I agree there is a lot of confusion about models, various configurations  and options on the same car model.

Also on a earlier user's manual, lot of functions and option are not explained or just documented.

It's quite normal, becuase nowadays our cars are more like a "computer running software" than a mechanical toy ! Btw ... Skoda (or all manufacturer) should do much better than this !

Also being an electronic engineer, I will not start playing with VCDS and other programming tools ( "it works, don't touch!" ) until a clear and tested procedure is available.

Googling around, I found lot of infos (and Ebay offers $$$) about enabling options (TSR comprise) but it's never clear to which actual model it apply ... and also which requirements should be fullfilled prior to start tweacking (needed installed hardware, base software, etc).

So if you have any interesting infos, page to visit, etc, please let me know !

PS : in the last week (mid september 2020) I receive at least 3 - 4 software update (bug fixes and minor change) ... but really I don't see any difference ...

Have a nice day .......... Pietro

Hi,

I'm an embedded software engineer that's why I also refuse to touch any VCDS, I wouldn't want someone to just "hack" random values in my software's configuration parameters !

So far the best thread I found about the traffic sign recognition is on that forum in german :

https://www.skodacommunity.de/threads/verkehrzeichnungerkennung-system.126122/

In the mean time I had a reply from the Skoda brand expert in my garage :

Hello

I also think that the panels should be displayed on the virtual cockpit.

We are waiting for an answer from the technical specialists to see if there are any coding errors on these vehicles.

For the moment everyone involved agrees with us that these panels should be displayed.

The Scala has exactly the same technical components as the Kamiq but does not have the panels on the virtual cockpit either.

I also very much hope that Skoda will find a solution to make an update, even if it is likely to take a long time.

It should be noted, however, that the camera has a lot of trouble reading the panels, which is an experience made on all models. It certainly doesn't work 100%. Apparently there is no real standard for how far and how high they are placed.

We will keep you informed in advance.

Not sure I like his wording ("hope", "long time") but at least he is on my side...

Hi Cinou,

sadly ... no news about this thema .... need someone with a good friend inside a Skoda Garage that can search and browse original docs and info !  :-)

Btw, I found somewhere the attached image, on the right hand side you might see the icon that should appear (I hope so) when you have the option activated in your car.

Actually, I don't have this of course !

Regards, Pietro

Indeed. I have the icon. But still, i have no indication of the traffic signs on my virtual cockpit (have it only on the amundsen when the map is on).

I still believe that the signs must be displayed on the virtual cockpit 😤

Same here... icon is present, traffic signs show up on the Amundsen but not on the Virtual Cockpit.

I have an open ticket with the after sales, haven't heard back in weeks.

I shall ask about a status update tomorrow.

Hi Chli ! haha !! I was not aware you had the icon on the right side of your setup screen ! My Kamiq doesn't show up this icon. Do I miss something in between ??

Btw, I think the only TSR indication on the virtual cockpit I saw, was when you select the big central view (Sport view ???). I mean the big central circle with speed, rpm, etc etc ...

Please try this ... and keep us informed about all your tweaking or mods to get the setup's Icon and real TSR display both on navi and/or on virtual cockpit !

Ciao ciao ! Pietro

Ciao Pietro,

I always had the sign on the setup screen of the "driving assistance" and I can configure the speed limit and the type of "alarm" I'm supposed to have (Visual or Sound or Both (with the exception of the exclamation mark I don't get an alarm).

But still no way to have the traffic signs / alert show-up on the Virtual Cockpit (irrespective of the view I'm in).

I've asked the "brand specialist" at my Amag garage for an update and he just told me that Skoda factory said they are investigating and will update us in 3 (!) weeks :) I'm keeping my expectations low.

Hi guys,

I have received a call from my garage today and he said they have fixed the issue and an update will be installed on my vehicle when I get my winter wheels installed on the 19th of November.

He said that it's my report that triggered them to investigate and that I will be the first one in Switzerland and probably in the EU to have this problem fixed :) So I'm impressed with the customer support so far also it shouldn't have happened in the first place :)

I was told the update will take about an hour !
