Buying my first new car, Scala.

Featured Replies

After reading about the 30-50% difference in prices between Slovak/UK I went to the UK configurator and configured a similar Scala to the one I ordered in the CzechRep ... and the price increase is really massive!

This is the UK configuration link: https://yaus.dev/jS2L0CHg

This is the CZ configuration link: https://yaus.dev/FHTWpF0D

The UK one is almost £27000, a very similar one in the Czech config is for about £19000 This is without any 'dealer discount', so the prices really seem to be +/- 30% higher.

Yup. For a Fabia, where the actual amounts are lower, even lower absolute differences meant higher percentage differences. (Fabia was the one where I saw 50% increase in price compared to Slovak prices).

On the other hand, the UK GDP is 2xGDP of the CzechRep, the min wage in the UK is 3x of the one in the CzechRep and the average salary is also approx. 3x of the avg salary in the CzechRep. In the light of this information, the higher prices are something one should not be too surprised 🤓

That's true, that's what I also said in my first post on this topic last night.

Oh yes, very much so. I was actually surprised by how much!

I checked the UK prices, compared several models (in the SE L trim) to their Slovak counterparts and the differences were between 30-50% !

For example, my Scala costs 22000€. I configured one with the same specs and extras on the UK site and it was £26000, i.e. ~30000€.

It probably has to do with significantly lower GDP and wages (and thus purchasing power) in Slovakia, compared to the UK.

Also, the extras quite add up. In Slovakia, Škoda offers several selected extras combined into one discounted package, in the UK you need to pay them all in full if you want them added to your configuration, so that drives the price higher.

Wow you're spending €22,000 on your Scala? Mine cost's about half less :D  And yes the price difference between the Slovak market and the UK market is huge. For the same make and model with the exact same options, the price difference is about €6500- €7000 more. So Skoda is i'm sure very very happy when they sell their Skoda's in the UK :)

Well it's a Style trim with DSG and a few extras added... Yours can't be half less, the basic model only starts at 13590€ :D

We placed an order for our Scala Ambition back in December, and it's supposed to be here in a week or two. And we received a -1500€ discount

That's quite a wait. I placed the order in half of January and the car is already here, I am picking it up later this week.

And yes, I got a 1600€ discount as well.

I just received an email from the lady that I placed the order from, she said I do apologise for the Slovak input I know this is an English forum, but this is dedicated to PeePay hehe, "Auto bolo vyrobené minulý týždeň, čakáme na dodanie, auto je medzi Mladou Boleslavou a Slovenskom. So this message really put a smile on my face, waiting 3 months for a new car really makes you impatient hehe.

I know, I keep checking my phone constantly for a message from my dealer about when I can come pick it up :D They said it would be by the end of this week.

Good for you, it's getting really close :)

Maybe the UK listed prices are not what retail customers actually pay?

The Scala's predecessor was massively discounted especially in SEAT badged editions. The late spec Toledo had a List price of about 21000GBP but retail customers (like me)mostly paid 12000GBP to 13000GBP. You can't believe the UK catalogue prices.

How do the discounts work then, or what are the catalogue prices for?

Everyone expects a discount of about 5%

But that doesn’t explain UK prices 25-30% being higher

The Government likes high list price as company car drivers get taxed based on the book price not actual price paid

UK car dealers have system where they refuse to discount cars more than few percent, but then buy and register cars at end of every month to meet sales targets, then offer them for sale much cheaper.

I once nearly bought a BMW but dealer refused to reduce it more than £1000.  Went back week later and car with identical spec was their special pre-registered at £5000 off.   It’s all to do with selling exactly correct numbers of cars each month to meet bonus targets split between private sales and business sales.

Huh.

@TectronSK We got ours today :)

Exactly.

I was actually told by a Ford dealer once that they get the cars at a cheaper price per unit from the manufacturer if they order over a certain amount in the previous year.  Sell the excess around normal cost and make more money on the “full” price cars.  Gives them more room for discounting as well of course.  How true that is I have no idea, but it’s certainly normal practice not to pay full price in the U.K.

Finance deals male things interesting as well.  For example, I got around £4,000 off list price on my last fiesta, which included £2000 contribution from Ford credit.  I would have paid less even with the interest for the car if I had kept it by buying on finance, compared to the “official” price of the car.

Yeah, definitely. I took some time to play with the new features, but it is never enough :D Hopefully we will go somewhere over the weekend, so that I can try them out in real traffic.

If you'd like you can send me a private message of your beautiful car and I will send you a picture of my car when it arrives after the weekend (hopefully) hehe

I actually posted some first pictures right now to another thread:

Yep, upgrading due to larger boot space too, for family trips.

I ordered Scala Style 1.0L 85kW DSG. Just a few days before I placed the order, the "Lava Blue" color became available for Scala, so I ordered that one, I love how it looks and now I will have one of the first Scalas made in it!

The dealer was actually surprised to see that in my order, it was only then that he learned of the availability of the color for Scala :D

Note for UK readers: the color is called "Petrol Blue" in UK.

Hi PeePay,  I've just taken delivery of a Petrol Blue Karoq 1.0 SE-Tech on march 2nd. I agree with you that the colour looks great, especially when the sun shines. My previous car was a Energy Blue Karoq 1.5 DSG ( or Skinflint Blue as a lot of owners call the colour in the UK!!!) I've already had a couple of neighbours comment on how nice the car looks with the Petrol Blue finish..... Good luck & happy motoring,  Jim.

Thank you Jim, yes, it is especially beautiful when the sun shines on it!
