Hi have a octavia vrs 2015, 33k on the clock. Master cylinder has gone and needs replaced. Does anyone know if this is a common fault on this model?

It's not a common fault on any model as such.

Have been told that clutch may have to be replaced also, surely thered be no need for clutch replacement at 33k

I've seen a clutch burnt out at 3k; other do over 130k. What do you drive like?

Honestly the car wouldnt do 180 miles in the week. Driven easy normally in eco mode as its the wifes car. Kick in the teeth just after christmas, just looking for any help or advice

Well, the best I can do is say that a clutch wears depending on the driver. I've never met you but used to live near an old lady who had a two tone Renault; green paint and blue smoke. She honestly burnt out clutches at a rate of one friction plate every 2_000 miles.

Damage could've been there from previous owner i guess. Never had any bother with clutch on any car we've bought before (usually vauxhall). Turbo sensor went around may/june but was still covered under warranty thankfully

The master cylinder is a relatively easy replacement as it out outside of the clutch assembly. It is normally the slave cylinder that justifies a clutch replacement at the same time.

 

The biggest cost for a clutch replacement is the labour. If you're already having to open up the clutch to access the slave cylinder then for another £100 or so it makes sense to replace the clutch at the same time.

 

Did they definitely say it was the master cylinder?

The concentric clutch slave cylinder (inside the gearbox) fitted to the larger engines is a fairly common failure point on many cars (not just Skoda). Tell tale signs of it failing are drips of clutch/brake fluid coming from the base of the bellhousing. Many garages "TRY" changing the master cylinder first as this is easier/cheaper to change without a full gearbox out job - but it's usually the concentric slave that goes wrong which involves a full gearbox out job.

 

The smaller petrol manual's have an external slave cylinder - easy to change but they rarely go wrong.

 

Yeah, that's about right. @Mucker161 , could you give us the gearbox code (from the specification sticker on the boot floor)?

Yeah they said it was master cylinder, if i can get away with just that without replacing the clutch it would be a big relief!
