Smokey

Featured Replies

So I've bought myself an 11 plate octavia vrs tdi. The car has 80k on the clock and comes with fsh. Since buying the car I've noticed intermittent white smoke coming out the back so have taken the car back to the garage and told then what I thought could be wrong (turbo)

So they inspected the car and no fault codes or nothing visible could be found. They did however check the shaft on the turbo and said there's a bit of play so that was fixed with fitting a new turbo.

Once I got the car back I can now feel the car pulls better all the way through the revs as before the car would pull well till about 3.5 to 4k rpm then the lower would drop off.

Anyway the car is still smoking and over the Christmas period of doing short journeys it seems to do it alot worse than say doing a 7 mile journey. I can only assume that whatever is going on isn't burning off on the short journeys which then causes it to build up and get worse. Then when I do take the car on a longer journey for the car to heat up properly it then burns off all the residue of whatevers going on.

It has a strong diesel smell to it and the car has since been into another 2 garages. The first one I'm not sure what the story is just that they were busy and the car would need to be booked in again later in the month. The car was then taken to a 2nd garage where the mechanic is saying that it's a characteristic of these engines and it's not uncommon.

Has anyone got any experience or know what it could possibly be. I've had the maf sensor changed as well as I've read a post on a forum that it could be that.

Any help will be much appreciated

Cheers

Sean

As there is frost, early morning condensation on the Honda behind, I would expect to see white smoke coming from your vehicle. I get it with mine when first starting on a cold day.

As for your other issue, have a search on here (or Google) for DPF regens. Look for the explanations on passive and active regens.

If the vehicle is  stationary when conducting a regen, as well as the diesel smell,  you should also see the revs rise from normal idle (iirc 750-800rpm) to about 1000rpm.

  1. Find another garage, one that's actually competent to work with diesels this time!
  2. Ask them to check the glow plugs.

It's the dpf doing its stuff that's all.

As above ^

Does look like a regen to me and sounds a bit throaty as mine does when regenerating.

Revs sitting at 1000 rpm when stationary?

The revs increase when the vehicle conducts an active regen. I only really notice it when dropping off or picking up my wife and she tells me the car smells like it's doing a regen (strong vinegary-diesel smell), sure enough the revs are about 200rpm above normal.

Thanks for the fast response guys.

The video was taken after the cars got a little bit of heat and is not a cold start. Yes there's frost on the ground however the car wasn't smoking earlier when taken a run that day and this is the smoke i see when on short runs other days when it hasn't been frosty.

The car mostly sits at 1k rpm and I have only seen it sometimes sit at 750 / 800rpm a few times since owning the car.

I've been advised to put an additive in the tank and not to use Morrison's fuel as that's meant to be the worst fuel.

The car pulls well and gets very good mpg. Hasn't used any oil or coolant so everything seems to be fine in that sense.

Once the cars right up to temp it seems to burn whatevers going on away and is then fine. Or if I drive the car slightly harder to work this also clears it.
