Cambelt & clutch change interval & cost? Anything else to do at the same time?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I thought that my Scout (2011 2.0TDI, CFHC engine, 100,000 ish miles) was due a cambelt change this year, as it was last done in 2016 at 60,000 ish miles. But then looking at the PDF pinned in this forum, I see that the mileage for cambelt change for the 2.0TDI CFHC engine is listed as 130,000 miles! This seems rather long, should there be a change at 4 (or however many) years too?

Assuming I do change it, can anyone tell me roughly what it might cost? (Non main dealer, of course).

Likewise, while I'm changing the cambelt (or getting someone else to do it!) is there anything else worth changing at the same time? I think my clutch is starting to slip slightly on pulling away, so could think of doing that too. Though I guess there's not much time / cost saving to be made by changing the clutch at the same time as the cambelt as you don't need to remove one to get to the other... Waterpump? Not sure when that was last done.

The only other thing that I don't think I've had done in my ownership is gearbox oil. I believe Skoda say gearbox oil doesn't need to be changed, but presumably it can't hurt.

Can anyone tell me roughly what a waterpump, and a  clutch change might cost too?

Many thanks.

I wondered how long the average clutch lasts I suppose? Mine is 100k miles and I believe the original clutch. I'm pretty gentle on clutches and think the previous owner was too, so I'd be hoping for more mileage before it needs changing. It doesn't always slip, maybe I'll live with it!

How long is a piece of string?

I've known one old lady who'd burn out a clutch in about 2_000 miles, and other people can do more like 200_000 miles on one. That's how much difference driving technique makes.

Thanks, that doesn't sound too bad. Whereabouts in the country are you, out of interest?

I Bath so about 30 miles from you. You could always do a day trip, drop the car off and do shopping. Save you at least £12 on parking for a day 😉

Don't know if you have any good Indy Skoda/VW specialists around there? Used to be one up in Tintern but that was many years ago. I used to live just outside Chepstow in Mathern.

True enough. I'll see if I can eke a few more miles out of mine, it doesn't seem to slip when in gear (i.e. revs don't rise without car speed also rising), so can't be too bad.

Ahh, not far away at all. I'd be interested to know a name, please? I work in Bristol so tend to go to garages there, but have yet to find one I'm really happy with. Supposedly good VAG specialist got my Haldex filter all wrong and had to do it all again, despite careful instructions from me.

I don't know of a specialist in Tintern, will have a look, thanks.

The garage is VASS (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat)   http://www.vassofbath.co.uk/

The owner used to be the Master Technician at VW Bath for 15 years before setting up on his own. They are on the Bristol side of Bath near the cycle path and good bus links.

Out of interest G-F, what mileage did you have yours done at? I've checked the manual on mine, and it does say to change the toothed belt at 210,000k, which is indeed about 130,000 miles. But this seems a very long interval between changes, much more than any previous car I've had?

Ummm... I had my first one done at 47k miles but the car was 7 years old (54 plate) so I was going on age. Had my last one done quite late as my mileage has dropped a lot so it was on 99k miles but 8.5 years after the last one I had done.  I believe VW/Skoda suggest 4 year intervals. I never reach the mileage limit so I cannot recall what that was.

I've an 07 plate with the BKD engine in it and had the belt, tensioner and water pump changed a few weeks back at £270 including VAT with a Dayco kit.... As a bonus they changed my oil, oil filter and air filter wich I supplied free of charge

I'd priced it up in around a dozen garages in a 30mile radius of Motherwell with prices quoted from £220, seemed to be to good to be true, to over £500 with the bulk being around £350-£400 with two VAG specialist places being the most expensive..

I'd bought the car in July 2015 with 75,400 miles on it and it had a belt kit fitted just before I bought it and was on just over 134,800 when I had it changed
