Flashing Red Oil Light

Hi Guys,

 

Firstly I just wanted to note that I'm probably classified as a beginner when it comes to car knowledge, so please take it easy on me if I've missed anything out 😅

 

So I purchased a 2011 Skoda Fabia 1.2L in November from a reputable second hand dealer, with a great full service history and MOT history at only 59k miles.

 

The car has been driving completely fine and I haven't had any sort of issues until a few days ago, where I was driving home after a night out and the red oil light starting flashing on my dashboard and making a beeping noise.

 

I stopped the car and waited a few minutes before checking the dipstick, and the oil level seemed quite fine to me and the oil wasn't too dirty. 

 

I turned the car on and off a few times and the light no longer appeared, so I drove home as usual, but it did turn on after a few more minutes of driving again.

 

I decided to get my car fully serviced in case there was a bad oil filter which was my first guess, or the oil just needed a fresh change, but unfortunately I still am having the same issue.

 

I'm planning on using a friends OBD Scanner to see what error code shows up tomorrow - but would really appreciate anyone's insight as to what the problem might be, especially after a full service!

 

Also it might be worth nothing I haven't noticed any changes to the sound of the car or engine since the light has been on - even though I had to drive it too and from the airport this week as I was away on business!

I believe the red beeping oil warning light is the low oil pressure warning signal. Low oil pressure can cause engine damage by starving parts of the engine of oil. Its probably best not to drive the car.

However since there seems to be no change in engine performance or sound it could just be a sensor.

Damn... I read this elsewhere also, but was really hoping it wasn't the case with my car.

 

I'm assuming the only way to know for sure is to take it to either the main dealer or a good specialist I know nearby. I'm really really hoping it isn't an expensive fix 😓

 

I'll keep you all updated as to what error code shows up tomorrow, and then what my specialist says also.

Oil pressure switch is quite a cheap thing if that has failed, could even be just a broken wire going to it.

Can you post a photo of the front of the engine taken from just above the radiator?

 

Is it a 1.2 HTP or a 1.2 TSI?

If it's the 1.2tsi, it's likely an incorrectly fitted oil filter, old oil seal washer left behind

This is what a fabia 1.2tsi engine looks like. Yours may have a silver oil filter opposed to the black one shown here at the front left of centre.

@IbbyC - As others, my thoughts revolved around the oil pressure sensor, pump, or pick-up. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to say which it is.

Hi im getting the same issue on my wifes Fabia mk2 1.2 (2011)

Car was fine. Sent it for a service, now Im getting the red oil pressure warning light if I drive the car for a few mins.

took it back to the  garage, he says the there is no oil leak and says it might be the pump or the sensor.

If I remove the filter, will that mean all the new oil will eak aware and I have to refill?

Maybe they have left an oil seal on or over tightened the filter.

Assuming the correct filter was used for your 2011 car. 

 

Is it a 1.2 TSI?

 

Have them check and remove the filter, they messed up a simple and routine job.
