Tow bar

Featured Replies

So just out of interest, I asked what my local Skoda garage would charge me for a tow bar.

Guess how much? You'll never guess, it was over a grand. £1100 they wanted!!! Jeez!

Anyway, I contacted a local towbar specialist who quote £495. I went to see them and was suprised to find they were on the same industrial estate. I enquired about the quality of the tow bar and they said "it's the ones the Skoda garage fit, they send all their cars to us and we do it for them" !!

It was coded and everything. That's one hell of a markup for sod all!

I had a Skoda one fitted when I bought my new Karoq 2 months ago. $2000 Aud which I thought was expensive. But it is a work of art, totally concealed when not in use and swings out when required. The electrics of the thing are quite complex.

Which towbar did you have fitted Swan neck or removable  or some other type

In Romania, begining of '19 I mounted a tow bar at the dealer (detachable one, OEM part I guess as I have some Skoda manuals for it) and it was around 500euro. Roughly the same as if I would have opted for a factory fit. (wiring works perfect, the sensors are offline when it is mounted). One other dealer actually said it would cost around 1000 euro, as they said the fan/cooler of the car needed to be repleced with a larger one?

Wanted a towbar with a bumper protector plate   not like the one above

A lot of places can fit a towbar cheaper, even with the dedicated electrics and the coding.

Any idea if your car has towbar prep fitted already? That cuts the cost down a bit.

Tunedude No the car doesn't have any towbar prep it's a 2014 VRS TDI Estate not picked it up yet hopefully next Monday

Fitted propriety Swan neck to my 14 plate Skud, only worry was re the reversing sensors, it sometimes gets interfered by the non standard hitch.

But I reasoned I have driven 40 yrs without one and managed, if you have something hitched they don't work anyway.

No real problems with on Skoda tow hitch.

I used Trident towing to have mine fitted.

Removable. It was £96 more, £495 vs £399 but it removes in seconds and then you really can't tell it's fitted. Even the electrics fold out of the way.

Yes you can get normal type bolt on "fixed" towbars, I have just fitted one to my Yeti, they are called "flange fit" or "flange type" IIRC.

I use a drop plate for my various trailers & a bumper protection plate, I also use a towball that has a coupling pin integrated for towing a site trailer.

The flange part is interchangeable with a swan neck hitch & in theory could be unbolted & only fitted when needed (electrics would have to be secured away somewhere) but in practice once the bumper is fitted you cannot access the fixings s make sure they are good & tight!

One (for me) great advantage is that its the closest fitting towbar I have ever had, very little projection and fits really snugly against the bumper (requires either the bolts cut to length or clearance holes in the bumper panel), the swan neck ones as illustrated stick out a very long way and now I have just become blind in one eye I would be barking my shins all the time.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post great help
