Octavia Mk III Intermittent Wiper Issue

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

Yes, I realise I'm yet another new user asking a potentially noddy question but for all the search through this forum, the wider internet and any publications i can find, i cannot seem to be able to get to an answer as to how to resolve my wiper related issue.

So, the background;

In Autumn last year, i noticed that my intermittent wiper would not work as designed.  When i click the stalk up one click from the off position, the wiper will function once and then stop.  It WILL work if i change the frequency toggle but will only operate one wipe sequence (sounds slightly rude but i shall persevere).  The other wiper settings on the stalk work fine so i don't think that's where the issue lies.

On looking through the forum posts on here, i found one that mentioned a similar issue on the Mk II where the relay had become loose or had become faulty, so a simple tap back in to place or replacement sorted their issue out.  What i cannot find, is where the relays are located in the Mk III model.  Id like to try and fix it myself if i can but I literally don't know where to look.

To add a bit more context, i did get my windscreen replaced earlier on in the year (in good weather so didn't realise that the wiper issue was until the poor weather started to hit later in the year) so i recognise that it might be the rain sensor but i'd like to check the relay first so i can discount that first.

All help/advice/novice bants is very gratefully received!

Thanks for your help.

It would be really worth getting the car scanned (VCDS etc) to see if the rain sensor is at fault here. Anyone near you on the VCDS members map?

Interesting you mention about the screen being replaced.  I wonder if they used the correct screen and/or put the sensor back correctly. Was it plugged in ok etc.

On my MKII I did have to remove the button from the stalk and clean the contacts to get it to work correctly.  This can also happen on the other stalk if you have cruise control.

Relays are likely behind the glove compartment:

Or in the engine bay near the battery, near the front wing.

Not sure what car you have though.

If you’ve got auto wipers then there is no intermittent mode, the toggle switch just changes the sensitivity, but switching it does a single wipe.

Auto wipers (four rain drops on the stalk) only work with it in position one. And as Orangewinger pointed out, it will adjust the sensitivity.

You could spray the sensor with a mist sprayer to check the effect it has with more or less "drops" of water. Also give the glass a good clean where the sensor is.

VCDS will certainly pick up any faults if you are close to someone on the Map above.

I had high beam assist problem in my Octavia 2013 couple of years ago. Took it to local garage. the mechanic took the whole sensor out from behind the rear view mirror and while taking it out he messed with it. So my OBD11 was picking up the fault of the rain sensor. Apparently i had to get both sensors replaced to get them working back.
