Difficult to replace water pump on 2011 Superb?

I've just been quoted over $1600 AUD to replace a leaking water pump on the 2011 Superb Elegance, with 105,000kms.  Apparently has signs of leaking coolant from the pump.

 

I can get a quality water pump for $200-300, and am willing to do it myself.  Has anyone done it themselves, or have any documentation?  Can't find much online.  I have a flat garage, tools, jacks, ramps, etc, and am fairly mechanically minded, but won't risk ruining the engine if its quite complicated or requires specialist tools.

It's easy enough to do the pump itself, but to get to it you need to remove the timing belt. If the pump has been leaking it will have contaminated the TB so you will need to replace that too. There are a bunch of special tools needed to do the belt as well.

Is the timing belt the one that should be changed every 120 tkm?

If one would change the timing belt because of that mileage by a garage, should one let the garage change the water pump too in the same process?

 

What happens if the timing belt is changed by DIY and assembled incorrectly, e.g. wrong timing, would the pistons bump the valves causing irreparable damage?

Yes to the first question (note it changes from county to country - 120K km's seems low but i don't know where you are)

 

Yes to the second question - many of the kits include the timing belt, water pump and tensioners and this is what a Skoda dealer here (Ireland) would change out when the job was due.

 

Yes to the third question - this is an "interference engine" and if the timing is out then you can wreck your engine. You absolutely must get the timing right.
