When Turning Left...................

Featured Replies

I don't mean turning left at speed, at the traffic lights the car turning left drifts slightly right before turning left, I understand about wagons having to pull wide................but not a car

We all understood this (i think) except chris GB who took it to the furthest extreme ever. you did say at a junction and not screaming along a dual carriage way....there is a difference.

this is why we are having a conversation cos if they did a swan neck driving at speed we would all agree its not safe Chris GB..

some people!:P

i had to avoid a big thing on the a30 up to weston! huuuge swerve, and bikes annoy me when they push their way through. its dam right rude when they nearly clip your wing mirror off. stupid people... some bikers are pritty polite and sensible but most of em are plain kn0bs ie little 16 yo's on their little lawnmower powered mopeds:mad:

true.

MO is that they some riders are too dangerous to be on the road. You see adverts saying check your mirror when you turn right....what a joke fair enough check your mirror but they don't actually state that it was the riders fault for being so stupid to overtake you when your are signalling to turn.

Why don't they bring out adverts telling bikers not to overtake on the right or cut through a queue of cars. it's down right rude!

All IMO of course and as said by someone somewhere "do i looked bovered?"

There is absolutely nothing wrong with moving slightly to the right before making a left turn off a major road into a minor road (not dual carriage ways), yes you should check your right hand mirrors before moving right, and stay within your lane on the left side of the road, and obviously your left mirrors before manouvering as well.

Frankly anyone who would be overtaking you (motorcylist or not) shouldn't be doing so at a junction and so they shouldn't be on your right anyway.

I was taught this method by my ADI many years ago, it helps with the flow of traffic as you can take a corner slightly faster due to having a better view of what is round the corner and reducing the radius of the turn, as you should only ever be driving fast enough to stop in the distance of road you can see clearly it will obviously increase that distance.

Hi Chris

Its not the moving out to the right that is the problem in itself, but the manner in which it is done. If you are in a lane next to the one turning left at the junction and the car in the lane next to you suddenly / quickly swings out toward you, it is dangerous because you dont know if they are going to keep coming your way.

As I said, done properly it is perfectly safe, but all too often I see people flicking the car right just before turning left.

Chris

I've not actually been aware of anyone doing this but if I did I would probably just think they were being a drama queen ;)

Well, Pixi, perhaps be aware that it does happen. Last time it happened to me, I said out loud that thank goodness I missed them (no swear words even, just sheer relief). My passenger said I should have beeped them  (after the event?). Might have made a difference for next time, but a bit late for that one.

Regards

Mo

Just to clarify - it's no big deal IF there is no-one else going past already (i.e. car pulls past the left whilst car turning right is out of the way sufficiently). If the driver of the car turning right then turns to the left again you have yourself an accident. Happens quite a lot as well. IMHO it's unforgiveable if you have dedicated lanes, one to turn left, one to turn right, at traffic lights. That really gets my goat.

Lorry and bus drivers etc that require the room tend to grab two lanes and by doing so block other drivers from getting trapped against the curb etc. They have blind spots so I'd rather they did that.

As for the turning circle - the Fabia has a perfectly ok turning circle and really that cannot possibly be the reason for swerving. Weight transfer on a public road at low speed surely doesn't warrant flicking the car left-then-right?

Again if there is no traffic I'm the first to admit I cut the corner a bit too ;)

Not an angel here but other than when driving rather a lot faster than the speed limit I've not ever had to rely on 'flicking the car' to get round a bend on the public road.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. There are several valid reasons to swing out to the right before turning left, as posted already.

1) As recommended by the Institute of Advanced Drivers, to get a better road position to enable you to see further round the corner

2) To make it easier to turn into a narrow side road, entrance, or driveway

3) To shift the momentum of the vehicle causing it to turn in more sharply.

As long as the person swinging out to the left before turning right stays within their own lane, I don't see the problem, and I don't understand what all the bitching is about.

:iagree:

And as for the flicking bit - I'm pretty sure most of those were jokingly referring to the rally driving flick they use to slide there cars round corners, rather than suggesting they do a 'rally style' flick on the roads, it's just a gentle re-positioning of the vehicle were talking about here.

id say this whole thing has being an over reaction by certain people on here!!

it's the same all the time on here!

Someone did this to me this morning at a set of lights where there's a relaxed left hander for those in the left lane and the right lane goes straight on to my work. It's weird how you don't notice it until someone says on Briskoda, but this fiesta didn't look before moving far enough to the right to be running over the lane markings, and pushing me over a bit too. :grumpy:

Oh well, I say as long as everyone's aware someone might do it, then all's good. I'm too relaxed to let things like this really bother me (or "bovver" as C.N says :D) Its just an observation of a current topic on here. :)

Hi Chris

I think it is a matter of degree here. "Swinging out" of the type where it could be used for weight transfer on approach to a junction is potentially hazardous unless you ensure no one is alongside you or gaining on you who may think you are about to change lanes.

Moving over in good time to help negotiate a tight bend or get a long vehichle around the bend is perfectly acceptable and an important and necesarry part of driving.

If knowing how to do it properly saves one person on here from a shunt, the discussion was worthwhile.

Chris

great discussions tho. just people get uptight too easily.

Once the rear ARB is back on I'll have a play ;)
