Buying MK1 Estate - Advice wanted please.

Featured Replies

Hi guys/girls

Just a shout as looking at a non pd 1.9tdi MK1 estate tomorrow that has done 200k ish.

I'm after something that will do a daily commute of circa 40miles a day with a decent mpg return

Aside from service history, oil changes - belts/pump and any clutch history, is there anything else I need to dig around and look for ?

Thank you.

Hi Buddy,

I recently bought one too - 2002 with 168,000 miles on the clock. So far, it's been pretty good apart from a few issues caused since I have had my cambelt changed but hopefully getting to the bottom of them now.

I'd give turbo a good test - if it goes into limp mode but no lights - then people say the vanes will be sticky in the turbo. Mine has done it 3 times in 4 months (3,500 miles).

Check calipers (habit of sticking), check all windows (regulators) and doors have habit of deadlocking.

Good luck, where is the car?

Have a good look around the bottom of the doors for any signs of water getting in and that carpets are dry. Its not a major issue, either a blocked drain or 2 or someone didnt replace the door sealing liner properly after working on the door (replacing a lock mechanism probably :D )

if its a non pd, its likely got another 300k miles to go on it :)

Thank you guys,

It was a pretty grimy car but I can see past that.  Bodywork was quite straight, minimal bumper scuffs, rear door 1/4 light needed replacing, it had signs of water ingress to the n/s/r of hatch. - But had evidence of brand new alternator/belts etc.

It needs about a weeks full work on interior/exterior clean.  Old sock/damp smell inside. & paint spill over middle console.

But was only up for £450

In the end she walked past another car, liked that better and put a deposit down. So didn't take it in the end.

But thank you for all your help.

Nsr water marks and old sock smell... water ingress. could still be from the front though, as the floor pan shape is tilted towards the rear on level ground.

Shame its still unbought, but someone will pick it up and give it the tlc it needs :)

I'm also looking at what seems a cheap and very tidy 2004 car, an exercise which is pure indulgence as I've just bought a 2yo Kodiaq and with two dogs, I don't want to get it dirty! This is a PD 130, just shy of 175K and is reported with no major faults, will find out the truth on Saturday but with MOT to the end of the year and nothing scary on its last two tests, it looks to be a bit of a bargain.

Aside from whats above, any hints on what to look for on it? Would be particularly interested in any likely rust areas which might be expensive/ terminal problems in the future. The intention is to keep it until either it falls apart or becomes a classic so the better it is, the better the chances it'll survive.

rust areas tend ti be around the wheel arches and check around the tailgate lock panel/ above the number plate.
