Auto stuck in D5

Featured Replies

6 month Octavia RS245 wagon, has decided not to shift up to D6 or D7 when gentle/average around town driving. Stays in D5 as top gear. Never did this up till now. Dealer says '6-8' complaints of similar but "nothing wrong with car". SAys Sydney Skoda knows of the issue, but that's just the way the computer decides to drive the car, perhaps hotter weather related. Seems odd driving around with the car revving noticeably higher than in the previous months driving.  Anyone else had issues?

Apparently normal in very hot weather. My car does it all the time.

As in my original post, on a trip to the beach, the temperature when we left home was near 40 C. Revs were higher then usual and it was holding gears for longer. I never saw the 5th gear. As we were coming closer to the coast the temperature dropped and everything returned to normal. Having said all this, your car is different, my DSG has six gears.

The serviceman told me it's was a temp thing, but doesn't line up with day to day temp variations. Last two days were 20's but still same issue with a rather dumb gear changing that aligns with speed clocked. 30-40 KM/hr =D3, 40-50=D4, 50-60=D5, 50-60=D6... it will have an impact on fuel consumption I reckon... if it was a manual, how stupid would it be driving around in less than top gear?... there has to be a better explanation... a week of 20's temp coming up so I'll be watching carefully wether transmission senses this... might call Skoda Australia soo to discuss.

I would not be believing Skoda Main Dealer Technicians if they are coming away with this guff.

Skoda / VW had to do a recall in 2012 with DQ200 DSG's which was said to be a Temperature / Humidity, only some World Area Issues.

Now again in 2019/2020 yet another Recall in Australia.  These were Dry Clutch 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch boxes.

If VW/Skoda have produced and sold into Australia 7 speed wet clutch DSG vehicles not fit for the environment and weather conditions they really are in trouble.

Seems now the explanation is software is "learning" my drive style. So now my 7 speed gear box is only ever going to be 5 speeds when driving below 60km.. seems stupid to me, and uses way more petrol... be like driving a 4 speed manual, never going beyond 3rd gear around town... wonder if a computer reset would turn it back to what it was like on delivery...way stupid I reckon... any ideas anyone?

When you want it to be in a higher gear, go into manual and shift up?

If you select Eco in driving modes my 7 speed DSG changes into 4th at 22mph (35kph) and 6th gear at 33mph (53kph) so could be worth a try for you if mainly driving below 60kph.

6th gear at just over 30mph?  That must be bordering stalling all the time? Now I do have a manual but I can’t think of any situation where I’d be in 6th at 33mph.

It's 1,100rpm and incredibly it will pull uphill from this speed without changing down to 5th gear. The first time I experienced it being used to driving at 30mph in my 517nm Vrs245 in 4th gear I couldn't believe how low the revs were. Although this happened when my car was standard (369nm at 4,500rpm) it copes even better now with 514nm at 2,800rpm. Great for fuel economy around town being 2 gears higher and low revs means less fuel and less emissions emitted into the atmosphere. Everyone wins with this very clever gearbox. For comparison having driven my Dad's 2012 Superb 168bhp diesel with the 6 speed DSG box his estate can chug along at 40mph in 6th gear.

60 km/h,  under 38 mph.  No idea why the OP expects the gear to be in D6 or D7.

@Adelaideskoda

If you move the shifter back to 'S' will if show 'S3' instead of D5 ?

I would imagine if the weather is really hot, the ecu will want the engine spinning faster to keep the water pump flowing the coolant round quicker. Makes perfect sense to keep the engine cooler and stop parts over heating.

^^^ Do not think so.

If VW / Skoda were simply as clever as that it would be a first.

Actually if VW Group ever manage to source good water pumps for ICE vehicles before 2032 that will be a amazeballs.

I’ll caveat this with, each to their own.

Tried 6th at 30MPH on my way home today. It’s not for me. Labouring engine, probably not saving any fuel really as it struggles to keep the thing firing. I’ll stick to 4th or 3rd if approaching something. Control > maybe saving a few pence on fuel for me. Remember my opening sentence...

Some interesting ideas here... ECO bee not tried, still doesn't go past E5.ECO seems to just change up earlier in revs, but still won't go past E5, until speed hits 60km... I've tried Manual paddles, but they will not advance past M5 at speeds under 60km. The hot weather explanation doesn't hold.... been 3 weeks of mild weather  here and no change in running. Skoda tech here in adelaide today told me the car had 'learnt' my driving style... is this a fudge way of saying that ECU does it own thing and all a tech can do is run diagnostics... if no faults, then it's all and everything to do with the almighty computer on board, and what it decides to do. It is extremely disappointing, the car moved through all gears on test and then when purchased. I was impressed it still could gently accelerate even in D6. This recent change in running is therefore way obvious, the car is audibly revving higher, the dial tells me so also, the fuel use is up.... of course stuck in the lower gear is more responsive, but I do not, never, need this for my driving style. If I want grunt in this car the turbo easily and quickly delivers it just fine.

No drive setting E, M, D will go to 6 or 7 unless clock speed is over 60Km, of course if grunt load is applied or road slope applied, a lower gear holds for longer, but still levels off at 5, regardless of E M D when the drive is level and easy up to 60.

Reply to Roootootem..... the car I tested easily slipped in and thru all speeds D1-7 as I drove around my area. I had the car for 3 hours, drive around my local area, easy up and down gear changes. Likewise the first months of owning the same car performed likewise. It just stopped doing it, and has not returned to the prior performance (which I really enjoyed)

I've not driven the 245 with 7 speed.

What rpm are we talking at 60kmh in 5th?

In my XF I don't get top gear below 100kmh and it's usually more like 120kmh.

Wanting 7th at 60kmh seems a little low.

@Adelaideskoda  I was not asking about any Mode settings, just if driving in D at around 60 km/h and it was in D5 have you ever tried shifting back to 'S' using the gear shifter.

Or as some when crawling along in traffic in D, going to 'S' so that it stays in a lower gear. 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.

How did you get the car to go into 6th?.... there is nothing I can do, using the paddles, E D or S that allows my car to be in 6th below 60km.... that was NOT previously the case, something ???? has changed, that is the crux of my question

D5 runs 17-20 at the. Upper end of 50-60 band for speed

I am wondering if the on board computer was hard reset what would happen... would test the theory about driver learning by the ECU... a few reprogramming things to do but that's only a couple mins.... or would adding another user to the car open a "clean slate" for the ECU?... does anyone's here know about such stuff?

Haha, sorry. I thought I’d mentioned. I have a manual, not DSG.
