Brightest bulb for reverse light? And how many rear fog lights should there be?

Featured Replies

It's a bad picture you can see loads more than the standard bulbs with them

Really needs a pic from inside the cabin looking back, normal bulb one side LED t'other.

12V 21W, the same as the brake lights and the fog lights

The rear fog light uses a twin filament bulb. The other filament serving as the tail light.

OMG, but wait, aren't we talking about the reversing lights here?

I'm sure someone else can step in and correct me on an unrelated issue, should I be wearing my pants on my head or over my trousers like these superheroes here!

Wind your neck in ya daft bugger.

Or just bugger off to a thread where you have useful input.

Was it the 12V 21W that made you join forces, a unison of Arthur Pewty voices raging against the dying of the light.

@Vfr400boy Many thanks for coming back to me with the exact item.  Much appreciated.  May well give them a go, perhaps just putting one in to begin with and seeing how it compares to the still working halogen other...

Cheers

They're on order and on the way to me, so will report back with findings :)

Well yes., it is all very enlightening and entertaining :)  I'm enjoying it, but still don't know what bulb I need to get!  So if anyone could help with that.

@Vfr400boy  - was that into a Fabia Mk1?  Do you have a link by any chance please?

Cheers all

From memory (AND that's only from memory) the bulb ( or lamp if you're pedantic) is a single filament type. No mention of type in Haynes, but both Euro car parts and Car parts for less show the singel filament 21w clear bayonet type as type 382 fitted to rear. I've always found the best way ,if in doubt is to take lamp out and let motorfactor find one for you . THEN note number and next time you order stuff from ECP or equivalent , add one to order ,till you have a spare set in the car. And ( although it might be different ) my 04 1.4TDI has two working reverse lights fitted as standard, but only one fog wired in. The missing link is in the wiring ( and again from memory in the connector).

From long years ago, I seem to remember that high powered reversing lights were frowned on if they could be operated whilst driving forward. . I also remember that any manually operated reversing light had to have a visible indicator to remind driver that it was on .Law might have changed, but then it seems that it's legal( so taxi firms tell me)  to park up on either side of the road with headlamps still on .

I hail from an area of narrow roads where you might have to reverse a bit to get back to a passing place at night. I found that using hazards + rear fogs + reversing lights was sufficient.

Hi,

I have Led reversing lights and living in a country area it is vast improvement.

  • 2 weeks later...

I changed mine for the same LEDs as Vfr400boy, big differance!

Things have been quite hectic busy here.  I replaced one of the reverse lights with LED and left the other as standard in a hope to compare.  On first glance when I done it, I can't say I noticed much difference.  The LED is certainly a whiter light.  But brighter??  Not sure...  But that was more looking at them, I need to check how much might they throw etc.  I'll try and take pics when I do.  But I am going away for a week tomorrow so might be a while....

Well, twice as bright gives you sqrt(50)% better range, or 7%. The illuminative range of reversing lights is measured in feet anyway.

That's in a vacuum Ken, everyone knows that LED's shine the brightest in Maccy D's car park, preferably blue LED's to counteract the red shift effect of these relativistic hypervelocity RICEmobiles.

Ideally you want bright LEDs. The ones linked earlier are standard 5mm LEDs and not very bright at all. If you find CREE leds or good SMD ones with a projector lens for example they will certainly shine bright.

go on eBay for 10 minutes and you’ll find some that will shine very bright!

And, strictly speaking, it also only applies to a spherical car of constant specific mass...

OTOH, in the real world, almost everything has adequate reversing lights ( well, except the Au'tin Oxym... Maestro).

I simply fed a wire from the rear RH fog across the boot to the LH fog, likewise I did the same for the reversing light too.

Nice and simple.

DB.

Strange- same model as mine & I've got two reversing lights, but only one fog.  .I did think of doing likewise with wire, but  the only time my fogs are on is in MOT place. Worth doing though if you're a bit more out and about than me as chances of two bu;b failures is a lot less than one.

I bought these from Halfords a few years ago. They're in the third car now. Started off in my MkI Fabia in 2016, went in my MkII Fabia and now in my Rapid.
Bright enough? They do give an error when used as a brake light but IIRC they didn't give an error as reverse lamps (CANBUS not monitoring reverse lamps?)

Do you have a link to any you would suggest @sakta ?

I typed "LED reverse CREE" and tonnes of cheap less than £2 bulbs from China came up.  Is that what you had in mind??

Well the ones you want are the bright ones CREE make not the generic 5050 model SMD.

This for example:

https://ebay.us/zKi5si Should be exceptionally bright, one left in stock!!

Alternatively these ones also look great: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-P21W-CREE-Q5-5W-LED-1156-382-BA15s-STOP-TAIL-REVERSE-BULBS-LAND-ROVER/310648357108?hash=item485415c0f4:g:QbwAAOxywCJRZFYW

They use a much brighter type of LED and are much brighter as such. The type you often see on ebay uses the same LED's are LED strips, whereas the ones I linked use the ones from handheld torches! So they'll do a good job
