Brake Upgrade/Retrofit Thread

Featured Replies

I couldn't find any other threads, for the MK3 at least, with any reliable information about bolt-on larger upgrades for the brakes. So I set about finding some information.

It seems that there is still a 288mm option officially listed for whatever reason (presumably just carried over from the MK2 VRS), but is not used in practice.

Though, 288mm isn't a great deal bigger than 256mm that come as standard, I also found that the Polo GTI comes with 312mm brakes on the front.

But what about the rear? Everything seems to use 230mm solid discs on the rear, except for the Polo R WRC, which comes with 254 mm brakes on the rear. 230mm is standard and boring, i won't bother with parts links here.

288mm front brakes are the largest possible brakes that can be used with 15 inch alloys though.

312mm front brakes are possible with 16 inch or larger alloys.

254mm rear brakes will fit 15 inch alloys, maybe even less, but ideally you only need this if you're going 312 at the front.

You will also need to change the handbrake cable when upgrading to these. (possibly maybe able to re-use if you have discs on the rear already NOT SURE)

These rear brakes may also have other minor complications, I've read you must change the settings with a scan tool for the ECU/ABS unit to handle the larger brakes properly.

You can get away without changing anything if you only do the front brakes, but the rear brakes you can end up with braking imbalances from the front/rear. (or so i've read, at least)

It appears the first time i was looking at MY2015, which doesn't include the WRC components, for whatever reason, so i'd been trying to piece stuff together from other sites.

Non-vented rears, hmm, 272mm is interesting though. Not sure how differen't the newest Polo platform is to the existing polo/fabia.

The older polo 6c from 2015 is more similar to the fabia. What is where i got all the bits from for the 312mm on the front

Hi, i'm making a list what to buy to try to fit the 334x32mm R32 rotors and pads to the front of my fabia mk3 1.2TSI 2015.

For now i know that i need:

17Z Caliper Adapter Kit

17Z Calipers

334x32mm R32 rotors = OEM number?

334x32mm R32 pads = OEM number?

Can someone help me out with the OEM numbers?

And if some advice should i try to go 272mm back from the "new" polo or stick to the 254mm from  the older one?

Thank you!

And do i need to upgrade the brake booster? If so, what would be a easier to mount?

Thank you again!

So a change of plans, got a bargain on a set of 18z calipers+ rear brakes from a VW tourage R50 for 140 euro, will try to  mount them on the Fabia. Is the adapter the same as for the 17z? And any one has a idea for a upgraded master cylinder  that would fit?

The mounting of 18z should be the same as 17z. The rotors should be something between 330 and 350mm. Use ferodo ds2500 pads.

Personally dont like 18z brembo's. Prefer 17z or the bigger 8 pot.

They where cheap so i can't complain, i just need to find a upgrade for the master cylinder.

Not sure i like the look of those flimsy aluminium adaptors to hold my brakes on 😨

Update :D

Ordered the adapters, they fit with modification, one corner that is facing the bearing housing  needs to be trimmed for few mm. After that they need a additional spacer around 3mm towards the caliber bolt holes so the brake disc is in the center of the calipers.  This is not mounted, as i don't trust the spacers so the adapter will be "cloned" with proper measurements and done by a local CNC shop.

I have ordered a set of rear caliperss off of a TT quattro. The calipers are the same as the polo wrc. But I think i need carriers off of a 2wd car with 256 vented brakes like mk1 Leon cupra R or mk1 Octavia vrs. the TT carriers may fit with spacers.  Haven't looked into how difficult finding the correct handbrake cable is yet
