1.5 TSI vs 2.0 TSI

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am looking to buy a 7 seater Kodiaq. We are unsure of what engine to go for. We want a petrol & automatic but don't know if it should be a 1.5 TSI or 2.0 TSI.

Is the 1.5 TSI enough to carry 7 people? We are mainly going to be using the car for long distance travel with about 6 adults.

There is quite a bit of price difference aswell with the 1.5 TSI (SE) and the 2.0 TSI (SEL 4x4).

Thanks

Welcome.

150 ps will be enough.

Only issue is it will be 6 adults without much luggage or stuff.

Best spec the Towbar prep and get a trailer.

The back seats can be quite a squeeze and you need to move the middle rear seats forwards. You should check it out before buying. It’s OK for kids, or adults for a short journey.

As said, not much room for luggage in 7 seat mode. I use a roof box too occasionally for holidays.

I have the 2.0 Tsi, and I’m reasonably happy. You are paying a lot extra for the 4x4, and I have no reason to think that the 1.5 wouldn’t be sufficient, I haven’t seen much in the way of complaints.

Good luck.

I have the 1.4 (now replaced by the similarly-powered 1.5).  A few times each year, I travel 100 miles or so with 5 adults and about 180 kg of luggage (filling the boot nearly to the ceiling).  I don’t find any problem with the power available.

As others have said, though, putting a sixth adult in, by using one of the rearmost seats, may be a bit of a squash for that person, and will drastically reduced your cargo volume.  Go to a dealers and really sit in the rearmost seat for at least 15 minutes!

If I needed a car to mainly travel long distances with 6 adults I would be looking at an MPV like a VW Sharan (my previous car) or a SEAT Alhambra as their third row seats can comfortably take full sized people.  You would still probably need a roof box though if you need to pack luggage for six.

+1

If I needed to carry 6 adults on a regular basis I wouldn't go for the Kodiaq.

Kia Carnival your best bet . hope Skoda make a Carnival competitor

Highly unlikely as it was left to VW & SEAT to have the Sharan & Alhambra.  Both of which were supposed to be discontinued but when Journalists were at a Launch for some VW Group 7 seater SUV's it was found out that those People Carriers were more useful for Carrying Full Grown People than the SUV's.

Or a Caravelle.

Still not much room in the boot of a Sharan or Alhambra with 6 in, and near none with 7 in.

That's true.  Carrying 6 isn't too bad though because you do have a lot of height to put tall cases or pile bags to the roof but it's not very pleasant for the one person in the third row sat next to them.

With my old 2015 Sharan, I just solved the problem with a 460L Thule roofbox up top.

I ran one for the past 3 years, more as a van & bike carrier than as a people carrier.

I specced the most basic so no roof rails, no leather, no door motors and 16" wheels.

( Brochures / official test figures are funny.  Lightest most economic model never shown as being better than the heavier more fuel using / emissions emitting more expensive ones.)

This was the last of the great  Euro 6 2.0 TDI SCR / DSG VW Emissions cheaters.

Amazing economy on long runs, over 730 miles from 63 litres,

& terrible used on short cold start trips not even doing 25 mpg and reggening lots..

That looks similar to mine which was a 2015 Sharan 2.0 TDI 140 SCR DSG SE.  Mine also ran on 16" rims which gave it a really nice ride quality.

Back in 2015, VW were getting rid of the last of the Euro V spec 2.0 TDI engines while they could before the September deadline so I managed to get a 25% discount from the dealer on the RRP via Orangewheels.  I paid circa. £24k OTR and managed to get £13.5k back by selling it privately 4.5 years later in Nov 2019 which I was very pleased about.

My only gripe with that car really was the top gear ratio on its 6-speed DSG which was quite low (70MPH @ 2250RPM) so it revved a bit high on the motorway which hurt economy and engine noise levels at higher cruising speeds.  In fact the ratio was almost identical to 6th gear on the 7-speed DSG in my current 2.0 TDI 150 Kodiaq.  The Kodiaq is geared very high in top (70MPH @ 1700RPM) and feels comparatively very relaxed at higher speeds.

If you do still want the Kodi, I have a 1.5 TSi SE DSG 4x4 and when fully loaded up for camping for a week on the west coast of Scotland it handles really well.  Only time it struggles a bit is going up the steeper hills.
