Yes, a lot as MK2 is based on different platform which has grown that area and generally all the comfort (front and load)

How much more do you think

I’m 6’6” and can fit an average sized adult behind me whilst I’m driving, I was gutted as I’d of bought an estate for work if I’d of known how much leg room was actually in the rear.

I have just found out my nephew has got on and he did a measurement from the back seat cushion to the passenger seat full pushed forward and i did the same in my mk1 and his measured 17” and mine is 16” not much of a difference

Hmm, don't know what to say....

My dad had a MK1 combi and I remember when sitting in the back my knees almost were touching front backs.

Now with my MK2 things are much better.

Perhaps seats have different design which could help to the improvement..

Short answer - Yes.

Longer answer - Yes, but how much depends on how much further back you slide the front seats. Having (access to) both, I can say that I don't slide the driver's seat in the mk2 back as far to get a comfortable (for me) driving position.

Yes, it surely also depends on  the front passengers how they adjust their seats, but as OP says he fully slides the front seat in the back in both cars and then applies the measurements as length room.. But again I believe MK2 has a lot difference as MK1 - it's roomier.

Also wheelbase is longer which should give more space in the backs.

the wheel base on the mk2 is 66mm longer than a mk1.. 2.5inches. not exactly acres, but as Has been said, i find my seat is a bit closer to the pedals than it was in my mk1 too...

Different driving position then in the MK2.....

Agreed but @mac11irl and I are making the point that this means we sit further forward, which increases the effective rear legroom even without considering the longer wheelbase.

Is your leg knees in the same (exactly) angle as between MK1 and MK2 in a normal driving position habit then?

Almost certainly not, but the only ways I measure driving position are:-

  1. Am I normally comfortable enough to drive for several hours?
  2. Can I reach all the main controls without stretching?
