Oh and surely (word of the day ) it has got to be a sensor??

6 mile drive with steering light on,  had to break little harder than usual and the warning light goes off...

  • So just an update, since last wednesday when i drove with the light.on and then hit breaks coming down  hill, my power steering light has stayed off.. odd, but not complaining 😁

  • Currently on sofa..lol    Wiltshire

  • The stop start might not be helping if the battery isn't getting chance to get charged right up. Roughly speaking, it takes about 20 minutes without a lot of steering to top the battery right up.

The cheap handheld scanners won't usually scan the PAS module, which is what you need to scan.

You can buy a lead for <£20 that connects a laptop to the car and then download VCDS Lite which is free software. Or find a local member who already has this gear to scan it for you.

If you search "VCDS owners map" or something like that on here you may find someone near that you could contact.

That's weird, the light went off and the steering started working without restarting the car?

It might not solve anything, but - A quick, free check to make sure the main fuse isn't damaged.  Lift the bonnet up and behind the passenger headlight, you'll see the box the battery sits in. On top of that is a small flap about the size of a fag packet with some cables coming out of it. If you open that you'll see the main fuses that look like flat bits of copper fastened down with a nut at each end. Give them a study and a prod and see if any of them have a crack in.

Yeah that sort of thing, but I'd be tempted to download the software from the Ross-tech website rather than use that CD which might have all sorts of malware on it, and an out of date version.

Make sure the terminal clamps onto the battery posts are tight too, try rotating them a bit, they shouldn't be moveable.

Depending on North, South, East, or West you aren't a billion miles away.

Happy to take a look for you.

I'm  westbury which is south west 🙈

Have you checked very carefully the strip fuses on top of the battery? They can develop very tiny cracks that are hard to see but can cause intermittent connection.

Example...

It's a lot bigger than a fag packet.

You don't need any more diagnostics, the pump is definitely failing, it's falling over once it's warmed up, a failing angle sensor gives you a code, a failing pump does not.

Should a pump really be failing when i only have 60,000 miles on the clock?? And no warning light on to be able to do a diagnostic test...

@TMB, the later covers are different, less 'covery everything'.

@Samantha75, I think sep has misread your post at the top of this page, where the light went off and normal service was restored after 6 miles.

If the light is on, or has been on, there will be fault code(s) to be read, with appropriate kit.  Bite @Tech1e's hand off if he quotes you happy for a visit; proper professional fella.

If there's a code it should be stored, I thought the garage checked it already and there were no codes, so they concluded it was the pump? It sounds like the pumps going into emergency mode when the light comes on.

By the way this failure sounds exactly the same as that which befell my 1.4 which turned out to be the pump after I'd already replaced the sensor.

So I'm not the one guessing here...

Cheer up, the secondhand pump I fitted was cheaper than the new sensor, I took the old pump to bits afterwards and it wasn't mileage that caused the problem, it was the gradual ingress of moisture over time that corroded the circuitry. Age killed it.

Cheer up haha thanks for that, can you just imagine what a garage would charge me for this?? I may as well scrap the car and look for a different job..lol

I'm sure your thinking I'm being over  dramatic, but as a community carer i need a car... happy bloody days

Not at all, I totally get it. My Fabia is my work car and if the wheels aren't turning, I'm not earning. I've just had an unpaid day off due to an insurance screw up.

TMB - yes, you're right, was thinking of the van... which isn't a fabia.

Fix Or Repair Daily. ;)

Seriously, it's unfortunate that you've got an issue like this more or less straight off, but cure it and the car could run for years with just consumables as billable items.
