Instrument cluster prolems and a question

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, the car is a 2005 hatch 1.9tdi Elegance. I made a stupid mistake of changing the LEDs in the dash, but I only changed the needles and the screens ( put in red, as I couldn't find white LEDs for the rest at the time). Plugged it in the car, all working perfectly, drove it a bit, parked it, drove it a couple more times throuhout the day, and left it overnight. In the morning, cluster was dead and the engine would start and then immidiately shut off (lost the code). Only the lights for low and high beams work and nothing else on the dash. Took out the dash and the ECU and did an imo-off on the ECU (actually gave it to a friend who does that). Everything looks okay with the dash, I even returned the old LEDs but it doesn't work, at least the car starts now. I put in a dash from a gasoline car, as I had one laying around, and surprisingly, it works! Well, kind of. RPM gauge is correct, temp gauge is correct, fuel is showing the opposite ( the needle slowly goes toward full) but the speedo and odometer don't work. Is there any way this dash can be made to work? Also is dash the same from a 1.4 tdi? It does look the same, but are the inner working different? Thanks in advance

From what year of car is the dash that is currently in your car?

If it was much earlier (2000-2002 approx.) it may be expecting a speed sensor input (for speedo and odo) rather than info via the CANbus from the ABS unit. Possibly just a re-coding matter though?

You might also be able to fix the fuel gauge problem by fitting a fuel pump from an older car. At some point the gauge circuit/potentiometer in the tank sender was reversed I seem to remember.

Do you have VCDS to look at the coding of what was in the car originally and what the current dash is soft-coded as?

I think it Is actually a 2002-3 dash, but I don't have vcds, i Had it but it died.. could a 1.4 TDI dash work?

Probably, but I don't know enough about the different part numbers or possible physical differences to be very helpful.  If you have one or can get one cheaply, give it a try.  If it's from a later car like yours it seems likely that the fuel gauge problem might not happen.

1.4 TDI dash is likely to be newer and will have the reversed fuel gauge issue as well.

Any older dash should work as long as the part number matches, it's only the circuit board you need so don't worry about stuff like rev counter numbers, you can reuse yours.

My car is a facelift model, so it already Had the newer dash, the one with grey around the numbers

In that case, yes, the 1.4 TDI dash will probably work just fine.

Thanks both of you, that's exactly the info i needed

Please let us know what happens, I would like to understand more about this subject. :)

It may be an idea to research the soft-coding variants for the dash cluster, it may be necessary to code whatever you put in appropriately to get accuracy on speedo etc.

At least it's easy to check for discrepancies in this era of GPS.

Will do. If I could find someone with a vcds it would be great, but i'll have to see

The freeware version of VCDS will do according to this chart, so only need to buy a compatible (cheap) third-party lead and download the software onto a laptop?

UPDATE!

Hi everyone, i finally got a dash, a 2006 TDI combi showed up on a scrapyard and i went and snatched the dash, mine Is model 6y0920 871 d and the one i got is 6y0920 872d, I don't think that's a problem. Plugged it in, everything works beautifully, but it has lights on: the immobilizer, the check engine and airbag light. I got my dad's Chinese Delphi knockoff and erased the airbag, went into the dash, only code is " faulty key", when I erase it it says system ok, until I connect again and it shows it again. The immo light won't stop flashing. Tried going into the immo also, the same thing as the dash, same code, erase it, it comes back. The check engine I cannot solve because this diagnostic can't go into the ECU, no idea why, it has a problem with some VAG cars🤷🏻‍♂️. Does anybody know how to solve that immo light, it goes on my nerves now that everything is working..

You will need Vag-Tacho to read the pin code of your old speedo unit and then read the Pin code of the new one, then with VCDS  you can get the replacement speedo unit to recognise your ignition key transponder chip, there is a video on how to do this on the Ross-Tech Wikki site

Damn.. the old one is dead so reading the pin from it is a no.. also I don't have vcds, looks like I will just put a piece of tape over the LED😅

I did the same thing, I had exactly the same issue and just taped the LED, immo light disappeared immediately :D
