Fabia MkII 1.6TDI - Glow plug flash and engine management light

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I hope you are all keeping well considering the current situation.

Today whilst driving back from the supermarket to get essentials, my glow plug light came on flashing, and so did limp mode. Luckily I was pulling into my estate when this happened. At idle the car seemed okay, but very lumpy at higher revs.

I let the engine cool down for circa three hours, returned to the vehicle to turn it on, and now the engine management light is on as well as the glow plug light flashing. Again, the engine sounds okay idle, but lumpy at higher revs.

I have previously had the EGR valve replaced about 1.5 years ago, but in that situation the glow plug light was flashing (no engine management light appeared) and a message appeared on the dash saying return to workshop. Also as well, despite the vehicle being in limp mode, the engine was not lumpy. Therefore I think this is a different issue.

I have had no DPF light come on, but I did notice that before this issue arose, the engine was doing a regen cycle. My commute is circa 3 miles each way, but every 1-2 weeks I do a 500 mile return journey.  Over the past couple of months, I have only been using shell V power diesel.

Due to the current situation of self isolation, I now might find it difficult to get a VAG diagnostic reader. I will try and get one but just wondered whether anyone can shed any light on what they think this could be.

Any help or insights will be much appreciated.

Thanks, Tom

Amazon is still going to you can always order an OBD2 scanner off there which is always a handy tool to own anyway.

Those errors can mean multiple things from a simple sensor (DPF Sensor but car drove 100% and no limp mode with the same error lights as you) but could be injectors, EGR again. Until you can get it scanned its not easy to give you an idea of whats wrong.

These cars really don't like the short journeys and the odd long one isn't enough to clear out all the soot and crap that gets built up. They defo dont like being driven like grannies either, give them a propper drive it like you stole it to get it really hot and it will burn off alot of crap in the process.

I’ve been having this issue for a while.

turned out the be the MAF air meter. I then however got it replaced and it was still coming up with the same error code (P0112). I now think it’s the wiring to the cable harnest that plugs into the meter (will confirm when I get a multimeter).

When you get the chance to find the error code let me know I’ll see if i can help with what I found out.

I have a 1.6 Fabia TDI CR.

To be honest Tom, the 1.6 lump is plagued with glow plug and engine management faults, regardless of weekly mileage. I was doing average of 450 miles a week. Not much help to you in the current situation. I sold mine at 100k miles on a 10-plate.

This was my experience on a P0113 fault. If you're looking, sensor is located on driver's side, underneath engine, near front. You'll need to drop engine tray to see it.

Ideally you need VCDS to pinpoint, and it really is a great investment down the line if you choose to stay with VAG cars.

Thanks all for your input. Much appreciated.

The fault was actually Injector 4.

Had to get it replaced. Went for the OEM part for piece of mind. Including a diesel filter change and some minor parts (injector seals etc) total bill was £538 - 2hrs labour total.

The car has been great to date... no issues, punchy, very good mpg, practical, but now this has happened, I’m scared of something else going wrong so might be looking to sell. I suppose it’s only natural to think like this.

Can’t lie to you I was thinking the same thing. It seems a lot of people have issues with the glow plug/engine management lights on the 1.6 TDI. As spartacus said. I’m on my second year and ever since a weekend at Loch Ness (driving from Doncaster) A couple of months ago, I’ve had nothing but issues with it. Then again for as long as I’ve been driving there’s some sort of bad omen where I have accidents/costly repairs in January/February/March for as long as I’ve been driving 😂

£538 for one injector might mean that there is the potential for another £1,600 bill in the not-too-distant future for the other three...

Had simalar issues with the 1,6tdi cayc and injectors after the so called EA189 fix ended up getting the cars software  rollbacked to pre fix and fitted 4 new injectors .

I purchased VDO Continental injectors at an average price new and sealed of £180 each from Ebay sellers ,although i did have to sit and wait and purchase one by one when the came up i then purchased the genuine vag cable in order to code them also purchased new clamp bolts and fitted them took less than a hour from start to finish .longest job was me being very careful i got the correct torque when fitting ther clamp bolt ..Once coded the cable come in handy again to prime the tail lift pump for priming the fuel pump ready for firing up..After that i did change oil and all the filters as  i was getting more oil out than i was putting in possibly diesel contamination ,anyway all that as now stopped and car is idling better, getting better MPG and when i now drop the oil i get out what i put in 4,3 litres ..If you have had the so called fix i would say in my opinion dont spend a penny on the car until you get the car rollbacked to its factory setting ie pre 9978 ..or you just end up still having EGR issues as well ..Just my opinion based on my own personal experience eith this engine

You do know that the Trust Building Measure would probably have covered the replacement of your injectors?

That fine if they fail under 2 years ,EGR was replaced after just 4k still ran like a bag of spanners, I could smell diesel in my oil and all injectors were running at either -3 or +3 dealer not interested as it was not showing a fault, biggest con going the so called emission fix ruined my car ..
