Oil help

Hi everyone.

 

I have a 2018 Octavia VRS 245 and I'm stumped on what oil to use - sorry if this has been asked before. I checked the service book which said VW508 00 then Google translated this to 0w20. I phoned my local Skoda dealership to make sure it was right and the receptionist said she didn't know but would check, then called back and said to use 5w30. 

 

What would you use?

Just that. My 1.2 tsi uses that while the previous dealer used 0W 30

Welcome.

 

Is your car still running the oil it left the factory with, or has it been serviced since?

 

Use VW508 so 0w 20 FS IV to top up.  Your car left the factory with that.

 At the next service you can decide if you want to start using VW 504 so 5w 30 FS.

VW508.00 is 0W20. Nice and thin so as to help Skoda hit their stringent emissions targets. Some might say at the sacrifice of protection.

 

My dealer did the same, albeit on a different engine. My petrol Kodiaq left the factory with VW508.00 0W20, but at its first service they used VW507.00 5W30, which I'm happy about as I believe it's better for the engine and turbo.

 

You can get 5 litres of Quantum Longlife III (genuine VAG oil manufactured by Fuchs) for £30 delivered to your door which is VW504.00/VW507.00 5W30...

 

 

Or, a lot of dealers use Castrol Edge...

Definitely switch to 5w30. Your engine and wallet will thank you in the long run.

My 245 had been in for its first service and I asked about the oil they use. The Service manager said they would use oil recommended by Skoda which is the 508.00.  He also told me that if the engine goes bang during the warranty period and Skoda do an oil test, they have equipment which tells them which oil the car has been using. If it's found that incorrect oil has been used then the warranty would be void. So until my 245 is out of warranty it wilL be using correct oil as specified in the Hand Book  508.00, 0-20w

^^^ Correct.    But then the Service manager missed the important part.   Maybe on purpose. 

 VW 504 / 507 00 is not the incorrect oil, and the oil some VW Authorised Repairers and Dealerships are using when the 'recommended oil' is VW508 /509.

 

Even VW 502 can be used in the latest TSI's for Fixed Servicing.    Not for TDI's.

I'd imagine Skoda UK might have a tough time trying to refuse a warranty claim from incorrect oil that one of their franchised dealers put in?

 

As Roottootemblowinootsoot mentioned earlier, you're able to use VW508.00 (0W20) or VW504.00 (5W30) in the current TSI petrol engines...

 

 

Both the Quantum and Castrol 5W30 oil listed earlier meets the VW504.00 / VW507.00 specifications.

169 kW is the 230ps engine and 180kW the 245.   That is the Skoda Chart. 

but using VW 504 will not invalidate a warranty.  

 

But many people like to play safe and take Skoda / VW recommendations as being gospel.     That can be a major error if you own a vehicle & are not just renting it.

 

@Zobzo  Could Email that local Dealership & ask the receptionist, her name, job title and qualifications and who she got the advice she gave on the oil to use. 

That is the same with anyone asking Dealerships about VW 508 / 509.     Then you have someone to go back on.

Interesting, so Skoda are insisting that only VW508.00 can be used for the 2.0 245PS TSI?

'insisting'   might be a bit strong.   

 

 Skoda CZ will get their recommendations from VW.   VW will say many things for many reasons.

 

It all seems to go Pete Tong between the manufacturers and then the Dealerships and the Dealership Employees.

As it is it is not a way VW Group can then blame owners / drivers.

My 2016 vRS 220Tsi was serviced only Friday by my local VAG specialist - someone I've used a trusted for years when the car is out of warranty.  As im fixed service every 12 months he used 5W40 in mine (VW502.00)
