Do PD engines have DVs?

Featured Replies

As above...

the reason why im asking is on cupranet, someone with an LCR is complaining that when his car comes on boost, it makes a loud squeeling noise.. like someone sucking thru a straw but louder.. ive noticed that my car also does this sometimes when it comes on boost, but not all the time. any ideas?

No, apparently they dont have DVs..

I found this on TDiclub...

"In the TDI, there is no throttle, so the turbo is ALWAYS working against full load. This helps prevent overspeed, and eliminates half the need for a waste gate. In addition, the particular turbo used in your Golf TDI has variable geometry controlled by the engine control computer. When more boost is needed, the computer adjusts the turbo vane angle to make it more efficient, speed it up, and generate that boost. When boost is not needed, the computer adjusts that vane angle to make the turbo inefficient, cutting boost. The result is a turbo that has minimal lag, and what lag it does exhibit is imperceptibly gentle and smooth."

Mine makes all sorts of hissing and whistling noises - but I like it! :D

There's loads of info on Tdiclub on this sort of thing. :)

There isnt one no, the loud squealing could be a boost leak.

Would it throw up an error code? i had a quick look round and all my pipes seem tight.

I think I found out a while ago that TDIs don't have dump valves. I believe that 100% of the turbo's "exhaust" is fed straight back in the manifold and there's no way that a dump valve would work.

I thought perhaps keep a high pressure canister in the engine bay, with a release valve on it, attached to a button which activates upon pressing down the clutch.... To get that proper "hissing noise" when changing gear. Only downside I guess is it will work for changing up too.. bit weird

It could well yes.

A small leak would cause a spike of overboost which should log boost pressure limit exceeded fault.

Check the conections on the vaccum unit on top of the right hand strut top.

We do a dump valve for the PD TDi, they are very loud and switchable :) priced at

they are electronically controlled

Do they have any performance advantages on the PD TDi engine' date=' or is it just all noise?

As above... :)

on some engines there is a noticable decrease in lag, we run a 4.2 TD 24 valve Land Cruiser and the lag between gears in much less now.

There may be a small improvement, but its mainly about the noise!

So it'll make the car sound like a bus/lorry ;) Yuk!

Chris

sold over 600 of these now so some people must like them

I was one of them, i put one on my 306D-turbo and i didn't like it i love it. When u drive a derv hard the engine sounds like ur gona kill it, stick on the DV and it comes alive!
