2014 2.0 TDI L&K Auto what to look out for?

Featured Replies

Hi all hope everyone is staying safe trying to get through this tough time, looking at a 2014 2.0TDI L&K Auto, what are the things to look out for, weak points, maintenance that should be done at this point?

Thanks, G

Pan roof leaking and iffy auto box? ....and no support from VAG group as they are not aware of any problems...worst case could cost you £6k+ ? Other than that a cracking car....

The wet clutch dsg is much more reliable than the dry clutch version used on the 1.2 petrol. I have this in my Yeti and it performs fine so far. I personally would not have bougth a dry clutch version. Whilsr researching this I came across a taxi with this grarbox at 540k and still fine with no gearbox or clutch repairs.

However I wouldn't consider a Yeti with a sunroof.

There are two versions of these sunroof fitted cars, those that are leaking and those that wiil leak in the future!

The panoramic sunroof alone would be enough to put me off an L&K.

Don't let the sunroof put you off, they all dont leak (despite some stories you may hear) ... the same roof is used in several VAG cars and possibly many other brands ... THEY DON'T ALL LEAK (may hundreds of thousands of them) ... do you checks and stay awake. The L&K is a nice car ... ours has only had one warranty repair to the SatNav .... so following on the doom and gloom don't buy one with a SatNav (its std by the way) 🙃

You only ever hear of cars with problems, never the ones that don't have them.

And the same can be said of the DSG transmission,  whether 6 speed wet or 7 speed dry clutch versions..... these are NOT inherently unreliable:  tens of millions are out there giving no trouble whatsoever.

The Wet Clutch DSG when serviced to schedule is not a concern.

There are tens of thousands of DQ200 DSG's from 2013-2015 that are part of a Service Campaign '34H5', as a preventative measure & from 2019 in Austrlia another Recall on them in SEAT, Audi, VW and Skodas.

Then there are the ones that have Slipping clutch issues from 2015 until now.

Maybe only 1 or 2% of the 2,200 or more that Skoda produce a day.   So no matter how many there are good, there would be more trust if VW Group were not always being pushed to own up to the amount of bad ones.

Check the lower doors for rust  bubbles / zinc inclusions.

Whilst that is very true, the amount of complaints around Skoda sunroofs is unusually high.

People rarely complain about the sat nav not working, but there are many, many threads on sunroof issues.

The design is poor. The drainage channels are easily blocked, unnecessarily narrow in places and often compromised in areas well out of reach / view.

If you're aware of the potential issues and are proactive rather than reactive and are able to periodically clean the gutters of leaves and debris, as well as ensuring water is draining out inside each wheel arch then your chances of suffering issues would be significantly reduced.

The roof being faulty is one thing, being able to fix it is another. If the sat nav breaks pull it out of the dashboard and slot a new one in. When you've got water entering the interior and pooling under the carpets around several electronic control modules then it can be an absolute nightmare finding the source of the issue and an extremely expensive nightmare if out of warranty too.

As nice as the roof is, and a no brainer for the first three years whilst under warranty, the benefits just don't outweigh the risk of it being a major headache sooner rather than later, at least for me. Take a look in the MkII Superb and Yeti forums (where L&K's were popular and the sunroof was standard), there are leaky sunroof threads on almost every page.

I had the L & K manual 2.0 tdi  for 4 years and no issues with the sunroof leaking,( a known issue of rattley roof was repaired under warranty ), but it does appear to be bit of a SKODA issue like the rusty doors which I also escaped any issues but it does appear that Skoda have failed to address the issue in  many years of production when it usually involves trapped drainage pipes and after 2 Skoda’s in 5 years the diesel gate issue was the last straw for me and yes I do have still have a panoramic sunroof and love it .non skoda.

So, that's two faulty sunroofs, on this thread alone. Both thankfully cured under warranty.

  • 2 weeks later...

Jeez, that thread alone is enough to put me off any VAG sunroof.

  • 1 month later...

Don’t forget the alloy wheels ( origami) on the L & K they started to delaminate after a couple of years and at the 3yr service was advised to put in a claim, but knowing that it would be a uphill battle (it’s stone chips sir) kept them patched up long enough to sell on.
