does the plastic engine cover help cut down noise?

Featured Replies

I've realised my 2001 1.9 tdi Octavia doesn't have the plastic engine cover bit, do these help cut down noise at all? I've seen them on ebay for fairly cheap, would it be worth a try? my car does sound like a tractor sometimes...

my only hesitation is that they look like they're just plain plastic and don't seem to have any foam / insulation underneath

There is sound deadening foam on the underside, but over the years it becomes less effective, I replaced mine with some metalised backed foam from eBay and it certainly did reduce the noise level by quite a it going on the sound meter app on my phone

Ah right nice one! Do you think you'd be able to find a link to what you used? I might get on that then!

I'd guess dirt from being sat on the engine block

Nope,  it was black sealant used to seal the edges to stop any oil from ingressing into the foam

Ah ok. Makes sense. A six decibel reduction is very impressive. I'm on the job !.  Cheers :)
