1.8 tsi gen 2 ea888 oil consumption and black smoke from exhaust.

Featured Replies

Hello guys, i am an owner of skoda octavia 2 1.8 tsi 2010. It has done 95000kms. The car is running great, has good compression, all the cylinders over 185psi. My problem is that it is consuming oil, 1 liter at 1500kms and when the car is standing still and i rev it, black smoke comes out of the exhaust (there is a code for turbo underboost p0299 which i think is diverter valve), not very much visible, but can barely capture in a mobile video. My question is since it is a gen 2 tsi and ive read many people having problem with oil consumption, what is considered normal oil consumption in these engines. And what kind of oil consumption you guys are dealing with the ea888 gen2? I really want to keep the car, i bought it a few months ago. If there is some serious problem that needs to be addressed ill sell the car. Thank you.

Hello Ayush, if the smoke is black (not blue) I would say that it is probably unburnt fuel, probably caused by the turbo underboost issue you mention. If the turbo isn't supplying the correct air-charge, the mixture will probably be too rich - excess fuel could be causing bore-washing and your oil use may be part of this. Check what VWs accepted oil-use figures are for that engine,

Oh, and see if you can get the underboost issue sorted, of course.

Thanks warrior for the reply. The vw’s accepted oil use figures are .5L per 1000kms. The smoke is black for sure not blue. Ill check what’s causing the underboost issue and get back. Thanks again for the reply.

VW for every engine from 44 kW, petrol or diesel 3,4.5.6,8.12 cylinders say May use as much as 0.5 litre in 1,000 km / 621 miles.

Which is a total nonsense, so not worth paying attention to anything  VW say is acceptable oil-use figures.

0.3 litres per 1,000 km has been unacceptable when people have had warranty cover and independent engineers reports to challenge VW Brands like Skoda rejecting claims, and resulted in owners getting engines replaced.

It is possible the underboost is the dv, or a worse option would be a faulty wastegate.

Underboost won't make the engine use oil though. If you haven't had a browse of the sticky thread at the top of this forum browse now at your leisure.  It won't make happy reading if you're not aware of it.  The compression stays ok until very very late in the terminal cycle of faulty oil control rings.

It's also possible that your turbo is letting the oil  by or the engine is leaking oil so eliminate those.  Pull the plugs and use a borescope if you really want to get some insight into what's going on.

Thank you everyone for there rplys. I do have a small oil leak from the timing cover, but i guess that not much oil is dripping through there. Will get that fixed and see if the oil consumption reduces. Thank you again.
