Problems with towbar electrics.

Featured Replies

Hey, Im having issues with the electrics on my Octavia 07. When I connect a trailer to my car no lights turn on. But when I enter my OBDEleven app, I can force them on through output test.

My car has the new socket for trailers but my trailer have the old connector. So I have an adapter from the new to the old. Could this be causing theese problems?

Hoping someone could know whats wrong!

Be more specific. What test exactly are you using from obd11? Details.

First thing I would try is to connect your car to a 13-pin trailer if you know of one.  If that works, then try connecting to a 7-pin trailer (not your own) and if that works the problem is in your trailer.

From the app I could manually choose what lights to start. I have the swedish version of the app and it said "output tests" directly translated. It might be the Adaptation tab from the Trailer Control module.

Yeah that would be the best thing to do. Can I check the 13 pin socket with a multimeter?

You can all sorts of things to diagnose the issue. Have a socket connector schematic ready (Google is your friend) and measure all pins.

That might be true for the side lights but how about flashing lights?

I couldnt make them flash, but every light had a constant glow when I selected them. So I do get power to the trailer.

Then it is not a wiring issue. You need a permanent adaptation using VCDS or obd11.

I have the OBD11 but I have never used it for doing long coding. Is there any guides out there for doing this on obd11?

Well, documentation for obd11 is almost nonexistent. You're on your own. You'll find eventually how to do it but you'll have to dig a lot.

Thumbs down for obd11 👎 from me.

I bought a new adapter today, 13 to 7 pin. Now it works! Don't know if anything I did prior to this had any effect. But I unplugged the towing bar electric box, inspected the inside and reconnected everything. Changed all fuses.

Thanks for all the great tips!

Glad you got a result.  If you have access to a multimeter or a bulb and battery perhaps try to buzz through the connections on your old 13-7 adaptor to see if they all work OK?

Yeah I could do that. I read something about pin 12 and 3 being joined together in order for the car to recognise the trailer. Maybe that was faulty in the adapter?
