I'm pickin' up bad vibrations - dogbone mount

Featured Replies

Now this is your stereotypical case of 'the devil makes work for ideal hands'........ and it appears to have gone sideways.

After a while of thinking to do it, I've finally fitted an aftermarket dogbone mount bush; a Powerflex Front Lower Engine Mount Hybrid Bush (Large) PFF85-833BLK to be precise. I chose the black series just to get the 'best' I suppose, but I don't know if that's the root of the problem with it being more track orientated. Unless I've fitted it incorrectly and or bought the wrong one, it's vibrating like a right beepity beep.

When you have the car idling, there's a little bit of an additional hum, but I was expecting that. The main issue appears when you go to move away and when the revs are between 1 and 1.5k, there is an almighty vibration which goes through the whole car. I drove the car up my close and the vibrations go away completely when you're over 1.75k. I've had the car back on the ramps to make sure I've not done a schoolboy error and forgotten to tighten it all up, but everything is as tight as it's recommended (I don't want to tighten it any more in case I break something)

Now I had to go to work this morning (slightly knobbled car or not) and I was able to check it going through the gears properly, even up the motorway. Once your moving, it's fine. As is accelerating (which actually feels better). But go into the above rev range and it's god awful.

I understand the rubber mounts are deliberately designed to get rid of any harshness, but deary me, if this is what a poly bush feels like, I've well and truly made a mistake fitting this. I'm at a bit of a loss because I had to 'chop' the old one out.

Help. Advise. Please 😢

If you've VCDS or equivalent, yep.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPjEiuaC7dk&feature=youtu.be   That was the video I followed.

  • so an update on the hybrid lower mount for you all. IT'S GETTING TAKEN OUT!!!!!!!   I've driven with it now for approximately 5 months and done about 6000 miles with it fitted and I can sum

One of the pitfalls is the increased vibrations they give. Many years ago I fitted a set of THS mounts to my car as they were rubber and they were awesome. I would refit an oe mount back in.

well as good intentions go, I think I've made a big mistake in choosing to replace the whole mount, rather than just getting an insert. At least with the insert it could take it out.

I have a purple powerflex insert and there is vibration at tickover. Disappears as soon as you touch the gas.

Motorsport 034 Ali dog bone mount in my TSI but, that maybe the issue here, if yours is the more aggrecultural engine you'll struggle.

IIRC the yellow polybush dogbone mount was the one prefered by diesel owners

Is that just the insert? Or the lower bush replacement?

Stay with powerflex but get the yellow (or I believe red is softest) version.

Black series are for hardcore track cars, it'll shake your teeth out! I've got the yellow and you 100% notice on startup but it's not intrusive and goes away when driving.

I tried the alloy insert and it was awful in my superb diesel so went with the power flex one. I think it is yellow or red and that is perfect

General consensus then is I've bought the wrong one (for my intended purpose anyway). Fiddle sticks!!!

I'll look to get the yellow one then, as that's the only other one which is the full lower section mount.

it still vibrates on idle, but it's definitely liveable (mines a tsi though, a derv would probs be a bit less refined).

I got mine from Awesome GTi for about 30 quid. I see you're liverpool, if it weren't for corona you could've seen what it's like in mine.

Just the insert. Wanted to be able to revert easily should I find it not right. Been in roughly a year and happy with it.

Didnt realise yours was the TDi like mine. Most places dont recommend aftermarket bushes for diesels. Hopefully you will get it sorted👍

And I feel that's where I've gone wrong. Buying the lower mount hybrid instead of buying the insert for that quick 'back to standard' option. Bum!!!

Mine is the TDI non-vrs. My tuner guy has a Passat with the same engine and has an ali insert. His is also dsg. Biggest benefit I found was the front suspension holding true when under accel/decel and cornering. Plus the more direct gear change etc.

It does feel settled giving it some right foot though.

I've ordered a 'yellow' one now, so I'll be able to see the difference.

I've got the Yellow Insert on my TSi - on idle a bit more vibration and oddly even more on reverse - but fine in normal driving and totally eliminated any wheel hop, I just get a disco in the dash now if I give it too much throttle.

and after fitting the yellow hybrid mount yesterday, going to and from work twice and then going the shops, I have the following findings.

  • The vibration on idle is still there. It's not 'as' bad as the black mount, but it is still very noticeable.
  • Driving the car normally is better, but again in between 1 and 1.5k, there is that vibration.
  • Motorway driving doesn't show any problem (and if it did, it would be straight out)
  • Giving it a quick blast on the way to work, the car felt very good and stabler than normal (was a chill this morning, some roads seemed damp)
  • Coming back home in the warmer weather, the car felt very settled giving it some right foot on the back road
  • It is a hell of a lot better than the black mount. It was certainly an error in judgement to buy that one; I've misunderstood that race, rally and circuit meant for those purposes only and not that it was just more durable / better.

With the roads being quieter going to work, I can't really say I could comment on the NVH in stop start traffic. The one thing I'd have have had to do is use one gear up in a few situations e.g. 3rd in a 30th and 4th in a 40. Seems to be ok 50 and above in 6th.

I'm stuck with it for the foreseeable and I'll see how it goes and how I find it.

From my initial findings, I'd strongly advise to anyone looking at doing this would be not to get the hybrid mount. Just get the insert and that way you can revert it back if you're not happy. Again, a poor choice from me thinking it would be better changing it all. From driving it normally, it does impact on the comfort of the drive, so if you're just looking for a something to make that Sunday back road blast better, don't get this as you'll feel it in your day to day driving. But then having said, it does appear to make that blast more stable. Usually, even in the dry, the TC light would be flashing away and interfering, to the extent I'd turn it off (I do usually turn it off anyway in the dry). With both of them in, the TC light has flashed a couple of times, both when I was deliberately trying to see a limit but not stupidly overboard.

Another point which, again, I'm finding out the hard way is the diesel engine may not be the engine to be putting these mounts on for the additional NVH. A lot of the reviews and comments you see online are from petrol cars.

Time will tell. If it annoys me to the extent I not enjoying driving the car, come the next service, I'll get them to put it back standard and go 'I tried it, I didn't like it, but now I know'. I'm finding, to be honest, with a lot of mods I make to cars or motorbikes, the cons do get in the way of the pros. Which does make you understand, if having said mod was so good, why didn't Mr Skoda, or Mr BMW, or Mr whoever put it on their vehicle in the first place!!!

Can you confirm the part number for the Yellow insert, I am trying to select by car type and it reverts to Audi TT.

Cheers

Brilliant, thanks

and after having it fitted for just over a week, I'm now left wanting to put the OEM bush back in. This has left me quite deflated, as I'd hoped to do a few other bits to the car, but if this relatively inexpensive part can cause such an issue, I don't wish to do anymore and ruin the car.

It's great on when you're moving (especially having a bit of fun), but it's too uncomfortable to have in your daily driver. If this was a weekend or track car, I'd be able to live with the additional vibration, but its not so I need to throw the factory one in.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I'd be able to get an OEM bush? When I search by using the part number, I only get links for the 'uprated' bushes

I would say main dealers or some TPS stores still sell to the public. Some vag specialists such as Awesome GTi, JKM tuning and the like may be able to get the original bush and post out to you.

I might have to suffer it for the time being then and get it done when it needs it's service and mot.

I'm guessing as well you'd need a bushing push for this as well?

I think they take the sub frame off and push the bush in from memory. But you might be able to use a jack and push it in that way.
