Kodiaq vs Q5

Featured Replies

Dear All,

In the middle of the pandemics, I'd like to cheer myself up with a new car.

The dilemma however is Kodiaq vs Q5. Is the premium worth it?

Option 1: Kodiaq LK TSI 2.0 - 11000km 2019 (Feb) @ 30k EUR, almost full option that comes with the LK (missing sunroof and leg wavy thingies). No ACC, no DCC.  Warranty - 2023.

Option 2: Audi Q5 TDI 2.0 - 55000km 2017 (May) @37k EUR - extra full, missing the 360 cameras. Air suspension. No warranty.

I recognize it is a Kodiaq forum .. but who better to know a Kodiaq than you guys :)

I am a 10-15k km per year driver. Mostly office in the morning, home in the evening.

Please help! :)

Both good cars, I looked at Q5 before I bought my Kodiaq but was a little disappointed with the small boot in comparison to the Kodiaq, that and the warranty would have me choosing the Skoda again. 🤗

The Q5 is a smaller car inside. If you don't need the space, drive them both. Buy the one that you prefer. If you don't have a preference, buy the cheaper one and spend the cash you saved on something you do have a preference about.

Test drive will win definitely Q5 with air suspension.

If you need outright interior space and practicality, the Kodiaq. Otherwise get the Q5.

I have a 2.0 tsi Kodiaq, but I've never driven the Audi.

I've always liked the look of the Audi since it was introduced and realistically I could afford a new one if I so desired (wifes opinion notwithstanding).

We all have different likes and dislikes, but I think the Kodiaq is a good looking car and the equal of the Audi dependant on colour and specs. I just cannot justify the extra cost of the Audi over the Kodiaq, for me it's all about perceived value for money and the Kodiaq does a fine job of transporting me where I want to go.

In respect of the two examples you show, the Kodiaq wins hands down for me i.e, newer, less mileage, less money, a warranty and in my eyes, better looking in that colour. Unless you're having a love affair with Audi Q5s, I fail to see why you would even consider the it, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I hope you let us know what you choose - just out of interest.

Tomorrow I am having the Q5 checked up and if all is ok, the agony will continue.

However, if the Q5 has any faults (especially accident or mileage - it happens sometimes in my country), then the Kodiaq it will be.

Practicality - indeed, Kodiaq is the one to choose, however, the air suspension of the Audi, the quality of materials ... would it be the same year, would choose it in a heart beat :)

Thank you all and please keep the arguments coming in.

I've been in an Audi Q5 2.0TDI. Even on 235/65R17 tyres, the ride was shockingly hard. I've no idea if it had air suspension. After just 10 years, plastic bits in the interior of the Audi were snapping off so I've no idea why you think the quality of the Audi is better than the Kodiaq. Czech built Skodas have an excellent reputation for quality.

10,000 - 15000 km's = 6,000 - 9,000 miles.

Skoda or Audi, I wouldn't be buying a diesel, especially one out of warranty when covering such low annual mileage.

The Kodiaq is petrol, so one point to the Kodiaq.

The smaller Audi is 2 years older, has covered 40,000 km's (25,000 miles) more, and it is still demanding a €7,000 EUR (£6,000 GBP) more, i.e. a 23% premium.

Several more points to the Kodiaq.

The Skoda is brown, a point to the Audi.

Those 4-rings on the grill or that air suspension needs to be really damn good to make those numbers justifiable.

I am no Skoda fan boy, they're far from perfect in an increasing number of areas, but (at least in my eyes) the Q5 makes absolutely no sense here.

Is the Q5 available in petrol in Moldova? If so are they much cheaper than the diesels?

They are not cheaper on the secondary market, albeit by little (strange), yet very difficult to sell. Many secondary come from Europe.

New cars, diesel is an additional 3-4k EUR (on Kodiaq 2 TSI vs 2 TDI) based on trim.

Everyone wants the increased mpg, although they drive the same as myself. We don't have strict ecology rules so, that is why all care only about the mpg. Some take out the particulate filter once it is filled :)

That definitely helps, here in the UK the removal of the particulate filter (DPF) is becoming increasingly difficult. Being able to remove the DPF and blank off the EGR when (and if) the time comes later in life would at least ease some of the diesel vs. petrol arguments for me.

Unfortunately, all the other elements still stack up in the Kodiaq's favour, at least on paper. I appreciate the 'behind-the-wheel-experience' might well be very different (I haven't driven a Q5).

If you were buying new, then I would warm a little more towards a potential used Audi equivalent.

When the Kodiaq vRS launched here in the UK, it was over £40,000 GBP, which at the time could get you a used 3.0 TDI Audi Q7. Given the choice I'd probably have gone Audi.

This was a year ago...

I’d say the Audi but I’m biased.
BUT if you drive the Q5 listen out for the metal noise when you release the brake pedal.
there was a common fault with them - you’ll hear it easily. Best way to describe it is like dropping a stone in a tin can

well, the Kodiaq vRS does not make sense to me (sorry if my statement offends anyone) ... the Q5 2.0 TFSI is a 252hp beast and almost the same price .. Skoda would not be so aerodynamic.

As for the other arguments, much appreciated.

Forgot to mention. Drove a Q5 (same year) as an employee car. That is why I know the car. At exactly 40km/h you could hear that sound and only the first time you hit the mark. Dealer told us it is the car checking all the systems. Then it was sold and never bothered about that. Maybe it is what you are mentioning.

I wasn't recommending the vRS, I was merely using it as a counterargument to my support for the Skoda.

Skoda wouldn't always be the default choice for me, but given the choices in the opening post I'd be leaning towards the Skoda, at least until I'd driven both.

That's a nice one!!!

Fancy a right-hand drive one?

For your budget (€37,000 EUR / £33,000 GBP) here in the UK that'll get you a delivery mileage Black Edition...

I can ship it over for a small fee 😂

Much appreciated! Nice car, however, it'd be rather difficult with the right hand here ;)

The 3 year old Audi has covered 55000 km, has no warranty and has air suspension so if it were me making the decision, I'd prefer a new Lada.

Seriously, it would be Skoda all the way. I wouldn't touch that Q5 with a barge pole - not a great reliability record and too many expensive options to go wrong.

PS   I assume from the flag on the registration plate you're in Moldova? but your English is perfect.  Is AlexHroar a travelling British Alex or a Moldovan Alexi  😄

I’m biased.  Driving an Audi badge is just expensive.

If we put badge snobbery aside, we’d all be running Hyundais and Kias.

In Moldova, all right. A proud Moldovan by the name of Alexandru (Alexander or Alex ;) ).

Indeed, it turned out that the Virtual Cockpit was replaced .. and I am certainly not going to risk buying something that has a tendency to fail and not be covered by a warranty 😞

It is expensive, indeed. However, as long as you are under warranty, the maintenance costs in my country are not that much different. All the other major items should be covered by the warranty. I.e. the period maintenance is about the same (maybe a 50-100 EUR dif). And that is once every year ...

Anyways, the Audi option fell off, now looking at an Audi A6 Sedan in nice trim, diesel (2.0) and quattro... so my uncertainty continues :)

30k km onboard and warranty for 1 more year (yes, that is what most of the drive in MD is ... 10-15k km/year) ... Drove it today and it feels new and maybe be better option for me and my fiancee...

No ACC on the Kodiak, are you kidding?

The lack of ACC wouldn't bother me, although it does indeed seems strange it isn't standard on the highest spec Laurin & Klement.
