Brake pads and discs

Featured Replies

Any one know what the minimum thickness is for pads and discs front and rear ?

Front pads min thickness is 10mm including the backing plate.

Rear pads min thickness is 9mm including the backing plate.

That’s from the maintenance manual. For some reason it doesn’t give the minimum disc thickness, that is apparently in the brake systems repair manual which I don’t have.

I would be interested to know the minimum disc thickness myself.

From the book of words.....

Front (25mm) min 22mm  Pad 14mm (without plate) min 2mm

Rear (10mm) min 8mm   Pad 11mm (without plate) min 3mm

Thanks 👍

The min and max of the disc is normally stamped on the edge of the disc or on the bell housing section.

Cheers guys

Must measure mine when I swap the wheels over to see if I need to do pads or pads and discs when they next need doing.

Am I correct in remembering that those minimum disc thicknesses are the minimum at which you can put a new set of pads on?

That’s debatable.  My interpretation is that the disc should be replaced at minimum thickness as any further wear will take it below that minimum. But by the same token it is the minimum serviceable thickness so you could put a new set of pads on it.

My front pads have probably got about 20000 miles left with me driving, at which point the discs will be around that minimum thickness so I’ll fit new front discs at the same time.

I fitted new rear pads last year, the rear discs were still good but will probably be at the minimum thickness before those new rear pads are worn out.

😬

That’s the thing, is 22 it’s worn out, or is it really 19, hence 22 stated so you can get a new set of pads on there and still be safe.

I don’t want to chance it, but equally don’t want to throw money away on a car I may only own for 6-12 months more if it is safe.

The text book answer is that the minimum thickness (in our case 22mm) = worn out.

I’d fit new discs.
I know in reality many people might just change the pads, and probably haven’t got the equipment to measure the discs anyway. If you had a 1.5mm lip on each face of your disc it probably would look pretty worn out though.

Step 2 of this from a manufacturer is clear about it.

I’m needing to change my rear discs and pads.

got a set before lockdown but it appears that there is a later different disc that the factors don’t list yet so might be a trip to TPS or the dealer.

Unless you have a new Facelift VRS245 then you will have the same 272x10 disk fitted to most other Octavias

Unfortunately not, facelift 1.6 diesel estate.the disc was the exact same size but the hub was a different thickness can remember which way the pads were the same.

The guy at factors though he had a similar issue before.

Sorry, your sig said vrs, did not clock the date.

The facelift VRS has a wider track, and seems to have different disks. Being a 1.6 diesel it should have the same as the pre-fl cars

There appears only one listed but the hub is bigger.

I’ve seen different answers from different disc manufacturers as to worn or don’t change discs below.

On the basis that it sounds more like worn I’ll check them and if over half worn stick a new set of discs on.

They’re not expensive, just didn’t see the point in wasting money if it was in spec.
