1.8 TSI ( 2014-2017 ) Are there any differences... ?

Featured Replies

Hi !

We are considering buying a YETI ( 2014-2017 ) with the 1.8 TSI engine.
But is there something different on the engine between the different year models ?
What is this engine for weaknesses ?

In the UK the only 1.8 TSI Yeti you'll get in those years is a Lauren & Klement up to May 2015.
No 1.8 TSI Yeti's built for the UK after that so I suspect the same for Sweden.
I think going by reports the biggest weakness is the 1.8s excessive oil thirst.

There are only 39 (registered) 1.8 TSI (160PS/Manual) in Sweden Source: car.info - Link [Out of these 39, 12 are "normal" Yeti and 27 of them are Outdoor model]

of the 1.8TSI (154PS/DSG) there are No registered in Sweden Source: car.info - Link

So not really a common version out on the streets here in Sweden, so I can't imagine that it will be easy to acquire one with these specs.

Avoid the 1.8 TSI like the plague...

Maybe so, but we are looking for one with as large petrol engine as possible.

Car.info is using data from Transportstyrelsen so the information is reliable. I don't think I have seen any 1.8 TSI out for sale for the last 6months. Basing this on data I have scrapped from various retailing platforms in Sweden.

Here is an general oversight (in Sweden) of the availability of the facelift Source: car.info - Link

Is 4x4 also an requirement from your side? If so the 1.4 TSI 4x4 is pretty common and shouldn't be any issue to find.

The 1.8 TSI will definitely be hard to find for sale in Sweden, you would probably have to look abroad to find one and then import it.

Going by the OP's user name that might not be a problem? 😈 😀

Yes, 4x4 is a must for me.

😁 🤣

....a mechanical fault with the engine is much worse than the engine taking more oil than normal.

Well then there's just two options 1.4 or 1.8 TSI. There's no other configuration with 4x4 when it comes to TSI.

As the 1.8 TSI is pretty rare, you will probably end up with a 1.4 unless you are very lucky to actually find a 1.8 :)

The 1.4 L&K 4x4 is only 10bhp behind the 1.8 and it has the same torque. It is also a sweet engine. Do you need the extra 10 bhp? I can't say how different they are on the road though.

My previous Yeti was a 1.8 tsi  which I had it from nearly new, for 4 years (78,000 miles) and px it for my current Yeti.  I adored that car, it drove sweetly and with gusto.  Never had any problems with excessive oil burning.  But! After buying it I began to hear rumours about major timing chain issues and my local independent Skoda specialist (not franchise dealer) was equally concerned.  So, I had 4 years of finger crossing I could have done without and I avoided leaving it in gear with the handbrake off on the drive, which I habitually have done with all my vehicles.  I'd heard that this parking practise possibly aggravated the fault.  This might have been a myth, but it was one I followed - and no problems occurred.   To be frank, it was a relief to trade it in, with fewer sleepless night when I eventually got rid of it :D.

The 1.4 TSI engine did came in 3 different power output in Skoda YETI  ( 2014-2017)
* 122 Hp.   ( EA111 ) Timing chain.
* 125 Hp.   ( EA211 ) Timing belt.
* 150 Hp.   ( EA211 ) Timing belt.

...Should the 1.4 TSI be considered as a "Better" engine compared to the 1.8 TSI ( EA888 ) engine🤔

Only one of these are for the 4x4 and it's the 150PS.

The others are for 2WD versions.

OK,
Do know what year/years the 1,4 TSI 150 PS was offered on the 4x4 Yeti ?

...mine is the 150hp and it was registered new at the end of 2015...

2015-

Most available in Sweden seems to be 16,17

I can highly recommend the 1.4tsi. I had a 1.4tsi Octavia before this car (another great engine but 122hp), and prior to that I had 1 2.0ltr diesel.

The 1.4 seems to have the same characteristics as the 2.0ltr diesel with plenty of low down torque and more than enough power. We brought ours originally to tow a caravan, (but never did). The 1.4 is very smooth and quiet and driven carefully is returning me 40+ mpg,  (mainly rural roads).
